Hi

It's been a while since I posted on here!

I will be ordering new PC parts next week. I want to spend circa £800 (inc). What do you think of this kit for £800?

  • OCZ SATA II 120GB SSD (for Windows 7)
  • 160GB WD Raptor (for programs)
  • 16GB GSkill RipjawsX
  • Asus Crosshair V Formula
  • Phenom X6 1100t Black
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7
  • Thermal Compound Paste
  • Saphire HD 6770 1GB
  • Media Card Reader
  • CoolerMaster Storm Scount
  • CoolerMaster Silent Pro 700w

The PC will be used for Internet, video editing, web design and downloads (to a NAS device).

I would be grateful for your thoughts and any suggested changes.

The last time you guys helpded me spec out my current PC (Q9450, Rampage Forumala, 8GB OCZ Reaper), you were spot on and the PC has been fantastic!

Thanks

J

Can you add from where you will be purchasing the items and how much they will cost so we can try to find better deals for the components you have chosen or find better components for the prices.

Thanks

Ultimately, I want speed and reliability as the main points here. I think the phenom X6 can be cloed to 4ghz, but there are other phenoms which may be able to exceed this at a better price?

J

The only improvement I could suggest is the 6790 instead of the 6770, unless you don't really care for gaming. It only costs a little over £10 more than the 6770, and the performance increase is quite good.

EDIT: You could go down the 1155 route, which would leave you open to the new ivybridge processors if you want to upgrade. If you get the i5 2500k and a p8p67 pro motherboard it would cost less than the AMD processor and motherboard and will perform better. You will save around £40 - £50, which could go into getting a better GPU than the 6790.

Where'd the WD raptor go?

Hi Guys,

It looks like the Intel 2500 is just a couple of places higher than the Phenom 1100t here? http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

I have the 160Gb Raptor already. It is being used as the drive where I install all of my programs (i.e Photoshop, Avid Studio etc). I love the Raptor drives, they beat other drives I have had hands down... I'll stick with that for programs and move up to an OCZ or Corsair SSD for Win 7 O/S.

I think I prefer to go down the route of the Z68 over the P67...

Again, your advice will drive my next purchase! But I do like the Intel 2500k tip....

Anymore advice???

J

Get the 2500k with the unlocked multiplier, which will allow you to overclock to a very significant number. A lot of people are easily hitting 4.5 - 4.8GHz with an aftermarket heat sink. Save up for a Noctua NH-D14/Silver Arrow to get the best out of the CPU.

OK Chaps,

It's a battleground here! I have 2 spces - 1 Intel bias and 1 AMD bias.... What are your thoughts for pure power, speed and reliability?

Both systems look good and this is by no means a value manchine, more of a best of what's available at a reasonable price. I have never used water cooling before, but I hear it cools better than stock and after-market fans?

Looking forward to your thoughts on the above...

Jay

I've never used an AMD based system in my life, so I would suggest the Intel based build. As for the closed loop water cooling, only the H100 is capable of beating the best air coolers (Noctua D-14, Silver Arrow) and that is with super loud fan's and not by much as well.

if you want i recommend to go for this pc system £799

what do you guys think?

Hiya,

The Aria PC does not have a SSD or 16GB RAM. These 2 elements are important as I use my PC for video editing....

I have changed the CPU cooler and RAM in my spec as the Corsair Vengeance need a lot of space when coupled with a big fan:

SYSTEM 1 - INTEL

CM Storm Scout + Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W Modular PSU *Special Offer Bundle* £128.45 £128.45

Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound Thermal paste 3.5gram £6.58 £6.58

All in 1 Internal Card Reader Plus One USB2.0 Port Black - 3.5" Bay £6.57 £6.57

OCZ 120GB Agility 3 SSD - SATA-III - Read 525MB/s Write 500MB/s 50,000 IOPS £130.00 £130.00

Asus SABERTOOTH P67 R3 P67 Socket 1155 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard £142.46 £142.46

Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £167.78 £167.78

Asus HD 6770 1GB GDDR5 Direct CU DVI VGA HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card £79.54 £79.54

G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V £39.99 £79.97

Noctua NH-C14 Top-Flow Flexible CPU Cooler with 140mm fan £70.04 £70.04

TOTAL inc. Del = £811

I have the following components already:

1 x 160GB WD Raptor

LG BlueRay Writer

Buffalo Terrstation NAS

Samsung 226BW

I will also be adding one of these to the machine: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/axp-xion-mtr001b-thermal-control-panel-black-colour-lcd-525-bay

How is this system looking? Do I need to change or add anything? I wish I could have found a board which can take more RAM sticks - ideally I would have liked 24 or 32GB! This would make video editing nicer to work with as well as pave the way for VMware to run bigger VM's.

As ever, looking forward to your feedback!

Thanks

J

Get an 1090T as it will overclock almost identically to the 1100T, get the Crosshair IV as the 890 chipset will run at almost exactly the same performance as the Crosshair V. If you're using a 6770/ 6790 you're not going to be gaming on that system so there is no point buying a gaming CPU like the 2500K for gaming, unless you want to game on this system, in which case kick that 6770 into oblivion and buy a 6950 1GB. Swap the NH-C14 for a NH-D14, as Tom says, if you have a 120mm rear exhaust mount and no side panel fan then the D-14 will fit in 99.999% of instances. You don't need AS5, the NT-H1 that comes with the D-14 is better and has no break in nonsense.

I would say buy 4 Patriot M2s as they are 8GB sticks but the Crosshair IV won't support more than 16GB. For the money 4GB Ripjaws sticks are the RAM to have.

Comparison of those two CPU's. Intel winning hands down. Comparison

I'd go for the intel build. It's better. The architecture is new, and there is future upgradability. My opinion.

I'd get something different than the Sabertooth though, for example the Asus P8Z68-V PRO. That's an excellent board.

You could also use the on-board graphics, until you decide what to get. Another bonus.

OK so now we have 3 systems, all of the same price (give or take £10) and a moral dilema!

SYSTEM 3 could also be reduced by £80 if I do not buy a graphics card right away. I NEVER use my PC for games, so I may be able to use the on-board for my photo/video editing? I currently use an ATI Radeon 4850 with 512MB RAM and it works great.

Again, a penny for your thoughts?

J

I would say only get System 3 if you are going to be using Intel Smart Response Technology. Although it is cheaper than the P67 you have specified and the option could be useful in the future. Why don't you go with the Noctua NH-D14 for the CPU cooler as it's much better than the one you have specified. Alternatively, you could go with the Thermalright Silver Arrow which performs similarly to the NH-D14.

So, taking everything into account I would say go for System 3
smile.gif
. It would be the best performance wise.

Hi Yassari,

Thanks for your feedback. Will the Noctua D14 and RipjawsX RAM fit without any space issues?

Also, I'm baffled as to why a chipset with more features (Z68) is cheaper than the P67?

Also, apart from 2MB more cache and slighter quicker, what is the benefit of the 2600k over the 2500k for around £70 more?

As for the D14, I am currently using this with my Q9450 at stock and it works very nicely (altough it could be a tad quieter!), so I may stick with it as the Thermalright is on par with the D14, although possibly quieter.

I think the price depends on the make/model and the parts used to make the motherboards. Some motherboards will be using better quality parts and so would be more expensive.

I'm not sure if you will have any issues with the G.SKILL, but I have a link to a website that shows that it is compatible with all G.SKILL ram.

The link is HERE

I think I am going to place my order today! Just a few more niggles to clear up with your help...

1. Corsair 120 GB SSD or OCZ ? Both are the same price....

2. I7 2600k or I5 2500k assuming I want the highest stable speed and will use it for video and photo editing (possible VMware for 2 simultanious VM's)?

3. Assuming I opt for the Asus P8Z68, should I buy a graphics card for £80 or use the onboard (my monitor is DVI and VGA) deemed that I NEVER play games?

4. Assuming I opt for the P8Z68, can I use 2 monitors at the same time to extend my display (i.e VGA and DVI)?

5. Will I be able to reach 5Ghz with the SYSTEM 3 spec?

6. On my current PC (Asus Rampage Forumala, Q9450, Antec 900 Case) I have lots of switches to change the various fans from Slow, Normal, Fast. Can I also do the same with SYSTEM 3 or do I need one of these? http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer...-air/multifunction-panels-and-fan-controllers

7. I have never used an SSD. I find that boot times with my current WD Raptore are amazing comparred to a normal 7200 RPM SATA drive. Will I be amaed with the boot/read/write times on an SSD?

8. Does anyone make 8GB dimms in DDR3, 9-9-9-24 form for around £50 each allowing the board to take 4 x 8GB?

Sorry for the pain in the butt questions, but for me, buying a PC is like buying a car, you spend quiet a bit of money, hopeing only to upgrade every 2-3 years - so you ask lots of questions and get the best you can!

Thanks again.

J
