Help with New PC Build Component

Don't worry about the questions, we are all here to help.

1. I cannot comment on the OCZ SSD's, but I do have a Corsair SSD and it is very fast indeed. I have heard good and bad things about both brands, but it is very rare you would get a problem and so you can't go wrong with either corsair or OCZ. From personal experience I would suggest the Corsair SSD, but it is a personal suggestion

.

2. For video and photo editing the i7 2600K would be the better choice. I don't do any photo and video editing and when I decided to buy a CPU, I just wanted to buy the best one in my price range, not knowing that the extra features of the i7 2600K would not be needed. I use my computer mostly for gaming, so the i5 2500k would have saved me some money. You on the other hand, will use the extra features (Hyperthreading) of the i7 2600K and that would be the way to go.

3. Yeh, if you are not going to be gaming than I think the onboard video would be the better choice. Although, I am not sure if a Graphics Card powered display provides extra performance (somebody else may be able to advise in that matter).

4. If the P8Z68 has connections for more than one monitor than you will be able to use 2 monitors. I read in another forum that you cannot use the display configuration in tandem with the Graphics card, and by that I mean that you cannot connect two displays to the motherboard and another number of monitors to the graphics card. Therefore I think you should just connect the monitors to the GPU because as far as I can remember the GPU will perform better at some tasks when compared with the integrated video.

5. No one can tell you whether or not you will be able to hit 5GHz, it depends on your cooling solution and the chip you get (Everyone will tell you this). With a high end CPU cooler like the D-14 you may well hit 5 GHz, but nothing is promised until you have the chip with you and can test it yourself.

6. You can use the fan controller on your case, but that limits the speeds at which you can set the fans at. With a fan controller you have a wider range and for normal use you can make your PC virtually silent, whereas with the built in fan controller you may have some issues with the speeds on the fans. I had an issue with my cases (obsidian 650D) integrated fan controller and by using an external fan controller all of the existing issues were resolved.

7. The SSD will be an improvement, but it depends on what SSD you get. OCZ's fastest SSD will have you amazed and there are others which are equally fast, but you really have to read some reviews on which SSD would be the best fit for you. As you will be using photo and video editing software you will need to look at which SSD has the quickest opening times for programs such as Photoshop.

8. I don't think you can get 8GB DDR3 DIMMS in the UK, but I know that they are being manufactured by a company called Patriot (I think it's called that). I don't think they are available yet, but when they do they will be quite expensive.

Yassri,

I really appreciate your in-depth response and help. Thank you!

I am 95% there on taking the plunge for the following items (see my thoughts / questions under each item):

SYSTEM 3 - INTEL (Same as SYSTEM 1 but with P8Z68)

CM Storm Scout + Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W Modular PSU *Special Offer Bundle* £128.45 £128.45

I read some reviews on this case and it looks like after my Antec 900 case, I will be very happy.

Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound Thermal paste 3.5gram £6.58 £6.58

Do I need this to get the CPU as cool as possible to try and reach as close to 5Ghz as poss?

All in 1 Internal Card Reader Plus One USB2.0 Port Black - 3.5" Bay £6.57 £6.57

Everyone needs one!

OCZ 120GB Agility 3 SSD - SATA-III - Read 525MB/s Write 500MB/s 50,000 IOPS £130.00 £130.00

I read some info on Corsair 120GB SSD's being recalled. I would prefer the OCZ Agility 6GPS - but is it worth the extra £45??

G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V £39.99 £79.97

Should I go for faster RAM?? Or will 16GB of this RAM be a pleasure to work with?

Asus P8Z68-V PRO Z68 Socket 1155 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard £137.99 £137.99

This is a concern and one I hope not to regret. The sabertooth is only £5 more, but the Z68 seems more feature rich and on par with excellant reviews.

Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155 8MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £239.34 £239.34

Yassri says this is the one to go for over the 2500k? No probs as by using the onboard video on the board, I am still on target for my £800 budget. Good call?

Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator and Fan Socket LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA775, AM3, AM2+, AM2 CPU Cooler £65.48 £65.48

Will this cooler fir on an I7 2600k as the spec does not say 1155 ?

TOTAL COST FOR THE ABOVE RIG = £794.38 inc del - unless someones knows where it may be cheaper than eBuyer?

The system will have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on the SSD. I may need some advice later on how best to configure the SSD/OS and Raptor/Programs.

So, just waiting for a couple more comments to convince me to take the dive and we'll get it ordred!

Thanks again.

J

With the high end Thermal Paste's there won't be much difference, but Artic Silver 5 has a break-in period which they say is 200 hours. After the break in period you will see the best performance from the paste. But if you want instant results you can use a non-conductive thermal paste such as the artic cooling MX-4 or the IC Diamond.

I use a Corsair Force 3 SSD for my OS and some main applications and that is £130.00 on Ebuyer. I have been very impressed with the speed/reliability so far and I have no complaints so far. All products will have issues, but I think it's a minority in most cases so I wouldn't worry about any issues with the Corsair SSD's. Which Corsair SSD are you talking about which costs £85 (I'm assuming it's the 60GB one). It's up to you which one you go for and either way you will be making a good choice.

Your going to be doing photo/video editing so the more RAM you have, the better.

Don't worry about the cost. All of ASUS' products are high quality and I'm not sure why the P67 motherboard costs more. It might just be that the P67 motherboards are more popular, which could explain the increase in price. When demand is high for products, manufacturers tend to increase the prices until the sales start to saturate, which is when prices are lowered again. I guess the demand for P67 motherboards is currently higher than the demand for Z68 chipset motherboards.

The D-14 will fit on 1155 motherboards, as the mounting holes are exactly the same as the ones found on the 1156 motherboards. I have seen plenty of 1155 builds using the D-14, so there is no need to worry.

What about the graphics card? I don't see it on the latest post.

These are just my opinions, but it would be good to hear from others.

Hi Yassari,

Thanks again for your comments.

The SSD I have in mind is the OCZ 120GB Agility 3 SSD - AGT3-25SAT3-120G (50,000 IOPS) although I think the Corsair Force 3 120GB is 85,000 IOPS.

I think the Asus P8Z68 has onboard graphics which I can use for now? If it does, is it ATI?

The Graphic's capability will come from the processor, so it would not be ATI, it would be Intel (As far as I know).

Does this look legit - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Arctic-Co...ound-paste-4g-Retail-/140609093959#vi-content ? And how does one use the paste? Do I need to scrape off the existing paste from the fan first (assuming the Noctua comes with the paste on) and apply the entire contents of the MX-4 paste??

Is there anything else I need to get ordered to get this machine flying, cool and keeping me happy?

J

Yes, that is the legitimate Artic Cooling MX-4 paste. There are various ways you can apply the paste. One of the more common method's is the "dot in the middle" technique. You can look at tutorials on Youtube to get a better idea. The CPU cooler will not have the paste pre-applied as far as I know, so you don't have to worry about cleaning.

1 more question before I hit CHECKOUT! Can I use the PC without any thermal paste until the paste arrives? I am thinking of having next day del to receive the PC parts tomorrow, but the paste will not arrive for 3 days.

I need give my PC to a buyer on Tuesday and will be busy on the weekend, hence the rush!

Thanks

J

Don't use the computer without thermal paste, you run the risk of causing serious damage to the CPU if it gets too hot, which it is likely to get without thermal paste. Just wait!!

"I need give my PC to a buyer on Tuesday and will be busy on the weekend, hence the rush!"

What do you mean with the above statement. Are you going to give the parts to someone else to build for you?

You can get 8GB DIMMS, check Amazon, they had some last time I checked.

Morning all!

The kit arrived and I am assembling....

I have a question: Should the Noctua D14 be installed with the fan OR the heatsink above the RAM slots? I have seen both on YouTube and not sure which is better?

J

Looks like it would be better with the heatsink above the RAM slots as with the fan above the RAM slot there me be a microscopic ammount of space between the RAM and fan...
