Win 10 - First Impressions.

So, I'm wondering why Windows 10 is downloading an NVIDIA driver update currently....I've been on the latest 353.62 WHQL's for a few days now. No newer drivers showing up on Nvidia's own driver download page...

Hope this doesn't break something.

This is why I HATE not being able to pick and choose my updates. W8.1 would sometimes want to download an older driver than the one I was using. Plus, it doesn't give you the install option choices the proper drivers do. I.e. I disable the Nvidia audio bits and the GeForce Experience thing as they've caused me no end of problems in the past. If this update adds these, then it can fcuk right off.

Problem solved. And it's not MS fault. Its better they have this way tbh. 95% of the consumer base actually needs it.

The built in cleanup on windows can do that as well but I used CCleaner because I wanted to clean registry entries too.
No, we don't like CCleaner when it's used once a month to "fix" the performance of the PC, I was getting random BSODs so I thought a cleanup wouldn't hurt and it could actually fix some things. So many old win7 dll and registry entries found

CCleaner will find more than Disk Cleanup will. I use CCleaner and Disk Cleanup and CC always finds more. DC will find some things CC can't when searching for system files. Other than that CC is the better option.

I'm liking windows 10 so far, the upgrade went smoothly :)

In terms of drivers and programs, everything works no problems there

Turned a few privacy features off and turned off cortana as i won't be using it.

First impressions are very good indeed :)

Exactly, it's a tool for the "experts" not for the everyday user

Yep, that's what I did.

Well, MS took away my option to choose. Sure, for many they should likely just update, but I was trying to avoid a known issue, but was given no choice but to have it fail. It was nice before to be told that there was a driver update for a device, I could then check what it fixed / added prior to installing it.

If it had been purely the NV driver that was pushed to me, that would have been ok in this case - I was already using the very same driver - it's the additional software it force-installed that actually broke things.

Still, I can avoid such driver updates now with that setting - I'd read elsewhere (not this forum) that this setting had been removed but evidently it has not. I even checked my laptop, which has W10 Home (auto-upgrade failed, it had Windows 8.1 Pro originally) and I could disable driver updates there too. Not sure where the person got their information from, unless it was referring to one of the preview builds.

sometimes the stoopid thing goes and deletes files that are actually needed like a file extension or a registry key and then the pc acts silly

It asked you to backup the registry. Literally own fault if you don't. Even then I have everything checked for that, for 3 years, not once had an issue with registry deleting every single thing it found. Not even backup the registry i'm so confident it won't mess anything. I make system images often enough for it not to be an issue anyway

So i tried world of warships on Win10, and it flickered like a mofo.. Likely sli related, anyway completed a match. Closed the game to see what the issue is and now my friggin monitor is flickering in the top 3rd on particular colours and stuff...

Not cool

Running a single 390x and not having any issues. Runs just as great if not better for me now. So yeah it probably is down to SLI. Should report it in the forums:)

Did you do the upgrade or fresh install? I was having major issue with games crapping out on me, had to re validate most of my steam titles for them to work and a few needed reinstalling, I'm gonna be doing a full clean install when I get back next week, got sick of random screen glitches and crashes.

I did a fresh install from the start. Always less issues that way compared to upgrading. Took me about 5 hours to get everything the same as before I upgraded which isn't to bad at all.

Ah ok so you don't like the Uninstaller part built into it cause i have seen you on other threads saying use Revo Uninstaller.

I wasn't able to go the fresh install path so i had to do the upgrade, I think i might have something to do with using an OEM copy of windows not a Retail copy but i'm not sure, I would like to do a fresh install but i'm kinda scared even tho it's saying "Windows is activated" but once i do the clean install when i get to the Windows desktop and go to System it will say "Windows is not activated" so i'm really sure what to do.

My Windows 10 has been installed for about 6 days now and it has been very solid for me anyway, I know there is a lot of people who has been having problems but maybe i'm just one of the lucky ones.

You can do the fresh install from that start, just need a ISO. You can reinstall windows now clean as long as the key is currently activated. Using an ISO is the easiest option

Yep I have Windows 10 sitting on USB drive.

There is some stuff left over from Windows 7 like IE11 & Windows media player that is the only 2 things i have found but i'm sure there is other things too.

I think when i start installing Windows 10 where the bit is when you have to put the Keycode in i think i can just bye pass that since it's already a Windows 10 Key.

Just try to enter it anyways. Otherwise you'll have to call them.

I had a retail version of W7 Ultimate. Now I have W10 Pro

I have an OEM copy of Windows 7 Pro.

I just made a vbs file to see if i have a generic key which i don't so looks like i have a Windows 10 key now so i should be able to do the clean install i will have to write that Windows key down so i don't lose it.
