Win 10 - First Impressions.

Maybe someone can help me out on something, how can you pin a bookmark from Chrome onto the Tablet mode of Windows 10?..Trying to make things really simple for my dad and its proving a ball ache. Any ideas?

Sooo.... Currently resetting my pc (just the boot ssd) because I couldn't get on the desktop anymore. It would load to the login page, log me in automatically as I've set it up, go to a black screen, reboot, same thing again but bsod instead of a black screen saying 'a critical process died'. The next reboot would bring me to the setup screen that says 'overclocking failed, press f1 for setup'. Didn't have anything overclocked so hell I'd better do a fresh install as I should have to begin with..

Good thing there aren't many things installed on the ssd other than windows. Hopefull this will also resolve my issue with a very laggy windows explorer.

Sometimes Asus boards do this for no apparent reason I had this no end of time with my 990fx Sabertooth I just used to go into the bios then save and exit after a while the issue went away :)

Gotta say that Windows 8.1 has been one of my best Windows experiences to date. People seem to lump W8.1 with W8 yet my experience with both has been hugely different. W8 was a bit of a dog, I ran it dual boot with W7 for an extended period and it was problematic and a bit flaky during that time. W8.1 on the other hand remains rock-solid. Boot times and the responsive feel of W8.1 are the most stand out feature vs. W7 and W8 in my view.

Scoob.

I agree as well. In my experience its by far the best Windows OS I've used.

Yep got this on both my maximus VII ranger and gene, fresh install via UEFI solved the problem, I think it is related to secure boot because it happened to me when i switched from an i5 to an i7 and for the second rig it happened after switching ram. Can't be 100% sure of my words though, but It's not happening anymore since 3 months.

The clean install resolved the issue, as was expected :) I'm setting everything up again now the way it was, most of my bench and monitoring software was on the C:\ drive along with a few other things.

My Xonar Phoebus driver is no longer supported though, but for now I've set it up with Razer Synapse & Surround, which actually gives me better sound than the Phoebus utility did lol.

I'm playing with it on my Athlon 5350 system at the moment. So far it's working just fine.

Some comments:

  • The upgrade went fine, and the subsequent clean installs after that worked just fine too. I was expecting the activation to be a pain, but no it worked just fine.
  • Passed its major test for me, my really old home recording and music production setup works just fine like it did in Windows 7 - that was the only thing I was concerned about not working.
  • Boots much faster, particularly with UEFI boot with the Compatibility Support (Legacy) turned off.
  • Don't know if it's any "faster" in everyday usage than Windows 7 yet though.

All in all, I won't have much hesitation putting it on my main systems when the time comes.

So after a few weeks I must say I'm in 2 minds still, it's a buttery smooth experience, programs / games are noticeably quicker and much more responsive.. the feel and usage is nice no question about that, I however have a couple of annoying gripes.

1st. Privacy! Turn all that off and it still sends reports to Micro$oft, Cortana and all her attached running processes continue to run in the background, even though they are switched OFF!

2nd. Updates! I don't want auto updates, "tuff" you're going to get them and we'll keep installing them even though you try to disable them, I've also noticed that while it's doing its thing Firefox locks up completely (Edge still works though) also I don't want nor need new drivers for everything the moment they get released! Do MS not understand, it only takes one borked driver to wreck a RIG!

As I said I'm still not 100% sold on it, yet, I need to delve deeper under the hood and really pull this OS apart.

im pretty much the same wraith in 2 minds i like it for gaming and general usability but losing all my home entertainment stuff has put a sting in its tail for me.
so one of my rigs will be going back to windows 7 until they release a media sharing app..

I'm still on 7, and don't plan on upgrading until all the kinks (this thread alone shows this could be months) have been ironed out.

I'm enjoying it for casual use, it seems okay. Mine did some weird crap this weekend though. O popped it to sleep and went to bed, woke up at 6 to hear the rig on...

Went to see what's what.. it'd woke itself up, meh I thought, started using it and carried on.
About 2 hours later, out of the blue, it goes back to sleep while I'm still using it..
hmmkay...

One interesting one yesterday, not a biggie, but it reverted it's wallpaper and colour scheme out of the blue... to one i had picked previously.. wtf?!

I must say it does seem to have a mind of its own, I keep getting random problems with my internet connection, strangely it just will not connect to any site, Steam and Skype all lose connection too, I check my router and all physical connections all is fine, it's like Windows goes into lock down

Turn off updates.

Using the regular control panel method does nothing, it still downloads and installs them regardless of settings, the way to disable them is to click start menu and type "services", then scroll down to Windows Update and disable them internally. Hey presto no more Micro$oft forced updates.

I'm still looking into the spying and reporting system.

Its called get your tinfoil hat on and install gentoo :D

They'll keep on spying on you until the whole world stops buying their products/it becomes fashionable to be a privacy loving company. Android (sorry, I mean Google..)/Apple et al are just as bad.

It's not going to stop cause most people don't care they will keep using Google, Apple & the biggest one of them all is Facebook

Exactly! Yet people are complaining about this like its something out of the ordinary.

Also Facebook is trying to do a Wall Garden for the internet but people aren't complaining about it either.

Simple fact is people just do care at all it's only people like us who care.
