Win 10 - First Impressions.

As the title suggests, what are your first impressions of world domination 10, sorry Windows 10. So for some it hasn't been an easy ride installing or upgrading in my case, but that is not what I want to hear about, there are plenty of threads dedicated to installing and trying to install it.

What I want to know is how is it running for you and how do you rate it as a user experience compared to your previous OS.

For me it's basically Windows 8.1 with a few tweaks namely to the UI and they have shuffled a few things around which has annoyed me somewhat.

Firstly, the new start menu, I hate it, I wasn't a fan of the metro UI with windows 8.1 or the lack of start menu, thankfully the smart guys at Stardock fixed that with Start8.. fingers crossed they do something with this one too.

Secondly, Cortana! Just no! My mic is now switched off, she's dumb and listens for your beckoning call and sometimes interrupts you by throwing Bing searches in your face.

Thirdly, where has my search bar from the bottom of the start menu gone!? Not a biggie as I generally use Win key + R which thankfully still works, again I hope Stardock are reading this ;).

Forth, the new "Settings" is a pain, when ever I see these huge menus and vague descriptions to what it is your trying to find, I think of those telephone with massive buttons for the elderly/partially sighted, there was nothing wrong with the old Control Panel.

Fifth, there appears to be some kind of stutter when navigating the settings and filesystem, could just be me but there is definitely something not quite right, like misaligned fonts and icon suddenly jumping into position when you open a window.

Any way that's my first impression of our new "free" OS, was it worth the upgrade.. I'm inclined to say yes but I'm not sold on it yet, there was nothing really wrong with 8.1 (for me at least).

So how are you guys finding it, let us know in the comments below.

Not a fan of the "all apps" option in the start bar. Much prefered the old way.

Not a fan of the pointless metro style windows they gave me in the start bar.

have not found that cortina woman yet, but if i do i will dissable her.

Not a fan of "most used" apps because i have not 1ce used skype and yet there it is in my most used apps.

Am actually quite happy with the file explorer, i open it and it tells me recent files which makes accessing something im working on periodically quite easy.

am pretty happy with the upgrade process as everything just actually still works.

Not a fan of the nvidia drivers for windows 10, but i do think thats a nvidia thing that they are working on "heard that through theold grape vine"

Not a fan of the new notification method "the display box telling you why its making a huge noise is Gigantic. i am not using 640x480 why do i need it that big"

Not a fan of what they did to notepad, now i have to open a notepad with admin privilages then open the txt or similar file that i want to edit. If i just right click the file and open with note pad. access will be denied when i try to save changes. "dissabeling uac does nothing to change that"

performance wise it does seem to be slightly faster now even dx11 games seem to have gained a couple of fps here and there, so thats a plus.

I will probably get used to the start menu "although im not happy that i have too"
The driver update issue wil probably get fixed sooner than later.
The metro style icons will just annoy me forever
The most used apps may eventually actually be apps that i use.

so in generall its ok. if i was going from 8/8.1 to 10 i would be a bit happier i think. but going from 7 to 10 and it is a bit too much like windows 8 still.

Note pad is working fine for me, no issues with any files at all.
I gave GTA IV a quick spin and definitely noticed the difference, I'm up by 12fps  Witcher 3 has taken a hit though.. seems worse, I'll know more once the next update is ready and I can play through again with current skills.

Cortana I find annoying with the speech app listening, switched that off and I can click the icon for her on the task bar now, quite entertaining asking her dumb questions (I have a new toy now).

I've not switched yet, so no opinions on it yet, sorry guys.

For that matter, I've not even had a look at W10, anyhow, how's the new Spartan browser compare?

I'm on W7 but have W8 on a spare machine which I don't often use myself, on the off-chance I have, I still find W8 a little getting use to, so with time I'm sure I'd get use to it, so how different in your opinions is W10 compared to W8?

Ta.

Not even looked into Spartan, I still use Firefox, IE is still present so not even sure if it's included, I'll be digging around the files tomorrow to see whats under the hood, but for now I'm just toying with Cortana and gonna fire up some more games.

well cortina lady says she cant speak my language.
I set it to uk english. speech to uk english, and downloaded the language packs..
Still she wont activate..
Slightly annoyed even if i was always planning to disable her

I have yet upgraded to Windows 10 yet, but from what I have... it seems that Microsoft has made "the OS of all OS". Yet, sounds like Batman: Arkham Knight in my ears, downloading and installing isn't smooth, rather a harsch way and much seems to not function correctly.

Sure, it's in it's early stages... but seriously though?, how long haven't Microsoft been doing OSs?. Even more so, they should've learned by now how to properly launch an OS that isn't faulty... after so many years of doing it and experience.

Obviously people will disagree and tell me off on this, but it's just what I see and think though.

I have installed W10 on a SP3 and on a laptop. I can say the Sp3 is slightly faster and just a very small slight boost.. nothing to write home about. The laptop on the other hand, easily noticeable slow down. Boot takes much longer, like 45 seconds longer and just using it after boot is slow. Not a worthwhile upgrade. It's running on a HDD but W8.1 was quick and snappy so no excuse for W10 to be slow. Seems a hit or miss and seems it needs an SSD to operate quickly. Wish it was just pure W7 but with under the hood improvements.. I like it slightly better so far in using it. Just seems more intuitive than the 7/8 mix.

To be honest those having issues are few, going by other forums and OC3D the problems seem to be minimal in the grand scheme of things, I was expecting forum boards to be lit up and packed with new threads but they have been limited, I'd say the reserve/upgrade system has gone relatively smoothly for Microsoft and the OS is pretty good barring a few annoying issues, mine being in the OP. It is quicker and smoother, games benefit greatly, blender, Photoshop & 3DS Max all feel sharper. Overall I think it's going to be a nice OS to work with.

In all honesty it's very very minor things and a few drivers need updating.

Most of the people I know got their Windows 10 install problem free, Updated from Windows 8.1 and boom done :)

Apart from Cortana not working properly I have nothing to complain about, which is a first ^_^

But what about the install problem people have experienced?... Like Shaun talked about downloading, wiping current OS off and then install it again?.

You launch the tool and it downloads it for you, shouldn't be a problem on regular desktops or laptops. SP3 had a firmware issue so that occured but after updating it it worked for me.

Most of the early install issues from reading forums is people being a little thick and messing something up ^_^

I've downloaded and installed/upgraded 2 laptops and my main rig, No issues at all so I aint got a clue what's causing others to have failed installations.

Surface Pro 3 had a firmware issue.. after I fixed that it worked like normal. Only issue I have encountered so far

I had the update problem. After searching and doing the delete in the downloads folder, and trying to force the install from the command prompt, I downloaded the tool and it installed. My biggest complaint is the auto updating of the video driver. I can't get all 3 of my monitors to work with any driver newer than the Omega driver. Once I install it, it updates itself, and screws me up.

It boots slightly faster than Windows 8.1. So far, all my programs work. I am still getting used to a few things, other than the learning curve of a new OS and getting things the way I want them, I am satisfied. Is the new Solitare letting everyone win the first game? I really like the update. I have not tried Mine Sweeper yet.
