The internet

Virgin media 50meg here and its fairly awsome, any time i check im never more than than 1-2% down from my quoted speeds and before when i was on 20 meg it was never more than 1-2% down either, the download limits before throttling for virgin (non 50/100 meg packages as they have zero limits) only count for each peak times slot, so 10am-3pm ish has X limit and 4am-9pm ish has X limit, the higher packages the higher the limit/smaller the peak times window.

Full list of speeds and how much before you get throttled for a few hours can be found HERE

Oh and the upload speed of all packages is being upped area by area at the moment by a good 2-3 times that packages current ul speed.

Virgin is the way to go. As i have already mentioned my friend has the 100 meg connection speed and its emense. 1.2TB in a month and virgin didn't say a thing. Yes it may be £50 a month just for the broadband but i cant find another isp that gives you such great speed for 50p a meg.

If you look on the virgin website they are making it so everyone have at least 10% of there download. 50 if you have 50 meg you will get 5 meg upload. My friend has a 12 meg upload but at that price i would expect it.

Yeah, my UL is due to raise next month and my 100 meg is getting connected in 2 months as soon as its available in my area
biggrin.gif
even on 50 meg im blowing through upwards of 600gb+ total usage a month no problem between my little game server machine (on 24/7 using minimum 150-180gb+ ish a month going from the low usage mb per hour readings), 2 360's (gamed on about 7-14 hours a week each), this tower and a laptop (gaming 10-15 ish hours a week each), and a netbook (used for web browsing) + the laptop/tower downloading films/music/programs/off of steam/the net ect.

Got to say the the customer servervice is better than BT was when i used to be on that aswell, had a few problems here and there with the net being down for no apparent reason on both ISPs and BT allways spent upwards of 30 mins telling me to turn the modem/router off and on again till they check there end/try to reset it at there end and virgin just ask if ive tried the off/on stuff already then they just go and check to make sure the signal is being sent through properly, its been that problem 9 out of 10 times for some reason since i originaly got broadband but i guess thats just my bad luck, but it was sorted within 15 mins of picking up the phone all the times on virgin.

Server machines usage from 11-just after midnight pretty much empty.

Same time frame as above on my tower.

I should probably set it up to database every machines usage to the server as thats never off so i can get a total monthy usage easyer.

Like i say virgin is the way to go. Cant wait till i can get back to work and get it.

lmfao - i hate that - when the callcentre staff read off a spiel in front of them and use a problem solving app in front of them.

i cut straight to the point if i have to phone anyway regarding downage.

i tell them i am a MCM Assessor and an ex-forces signals instructor, and there is nothing they can tell me to do that i've already done
smile.gif

i then say "fix it fast, or i want a refund for my downtime"
tongue.gif

if i get a 'muppet' on the other end, i give them huge sigh and a tut-tut and ask to speak to the floor supervisor.

they have now put this info on my records (after i told them to) - to stop other noobs talking BS to me

LOL, no matter what ISP you are with you always get a utter noob on the other end of the phone. When i ring my ISP i always say can i speak to the floor manager or you boss. I CBA with these people who no less that me about my problem.

Whenever Ive called Idnet (on the free line) I always get someone who knows their stuff. Mind you, with a monthly contract they have to else we could all just leave
smile.gif

The only other isp id contemplate a this point in time is zen adsl

Wow that IDnet is rubbish. £90 a month for 40 meg they must think people are stupid (i bet some people bought it though) for £40 a month less you could get virgin 100 meg. Which is 2x as fast and doesn't have and caps. Stay away from IDnet.

The other ISP you suggested is also rubbish, £30 a month with a 100gb limit. All i can say to that is BE-HAVE. Am not slagging you off but you need to have a good look around before you sign up with company's like these. There all the same, like i said in my original post there are only one or two worth while ISP to go with which wont rip you off or impose caps if you use you internet connection what it is intended to be used for (downloading things)

Maybe i would consider the likes of BE or virgin etc.

But in my area, and lot of the uk, there is no cable, no adsl2, no fibre optic. Hence my choice. Sure we get a bandwidth cap, but id rather know what im entitled to (in the price) and know it won't ever be throttled than tie myself down in a one year/2 year contract where they can call it unlimited, throttle speeds to control you and probably gain extra £££ from making you call premium numbers to muppets who have no idea how to fix the problem/s you may be experiencing.

They aren't all the same at all, and i prefer stability and reliability over saving a tenner and getting locked into a contract

pretty good considering peak time and that we only get up to adslmax in this area. So i wouldnt say they were rubbish - maybe a bit more expensive but a lot less hassle regarding downtime

I'm the friend DT-525 mentioned in this thread and if you check my sig you'll see my internet speeds. Of course when actually downloading you can round up the numbers to over 100MBit for download and over 12Mbit for upload. Speedtest can't seem to handle 100Mbit too well. I get this for around £100 per month, with the full TV package including all movies (full Sky Movies HD pack) and sports (SS1HD,SS2HD,SS3,SS4 and ESPNHD), along with 2 boxes and an unlimited phone line. When you compare this with Sky...here is the shopping basket when creating a combo that has everything Virgin offers me...minus the 100Mbit broadband as they only offer 20Mbit (5x slower)...

And I had no initial cost when I ordered my services with Virgin Media.

Wow I thought I was behind in my internet with these speeds but I feel sorry for you guys

Here is a test to Manchester from here

The big problem with internet access in the UK is that most phone cables are 30 if not 50 years old. It is getting better now since fiber is becoming wide spread but if your not close to a phone exchange on copper your screwed.

that's just the way it is.

Nice download speed by the way, but your upload is terrible.

Yeah Upload in Aus is pretty average, I normally get 600 to 800Kbs upload but that's still a bit low.

Aus is upgrading its lines to fiber every calling it "Fiber home to home" so we'll have a fiber line to my door
smile.gif
Can't wait but this is few year away yet that I will see it in this part of Aus.

I get 100KBps with Windows, but 250KBps with Linux, and around the 2MBps for both when it comes to downloading.

EDIT: 100/250 is upload.

Yes and no? I'm under 25miles outside of London, but 89% of Gerrards Cross is Green Belt, so we don't tend to get the latest tech. I think the max speed possible on the line is around 20Mbps or so. So we are close to maxing that.

BUT hopefully by October I'm at Uni, and that's 20MBps
