PS3 Cell CPU to only have 7cores??

It seems Sony have advised developers that they are having yield problems and that only 7 cores will definately run on ALL of their Cell procs - though some may have all 8 promised running...if your lucky...and the wind blows the right way...and a black cat crosses your path (or is that bad luck? :eh

The ever omnipient Inquirer have found this out through one of their sources...tho they're becoming a bit mre reliable nowadays IMO:

SONY SAID that its miraculous cell chip will have seven cores operational. Sony can guaranty that the seven cores will work, while the other one might work in some cases but the company can not guarante this.

Sony said that this is due to yield problems but is adamant that the seven cores will work in every case. The company advised developers to bear that in mind when they're getting down and dirty on the development front

On the up side - 7.1 surround sound is processed by the CPU on-die

The Cell chip will do the audio as well, and a Sony chap told us that the Playstation 3 can do 7.1 audio amounting to an outstanding 1,000 channels, more or less. In comparison, the Sony Playstation 2 can do only 16 channels. But the more channels you use, the more performance you lose.

Well that also sounds pretty good - the new Creative X-Fi's are boasting similar performance with their new APU's. Just hope the developers are sensible about it

Yeah this isn't such good news, I will still get it but it won't be as good as initially put out.
