I never even knew that they were going to make a 1gb version, sounds like it could be a goodun though!
I pre-ordered mine about 2-3 weeks ago and still haven't received it. Ordered it with the rest of my PC upgrades (which I've received). I contacted my retailer and they said AMD/ATI are running low on supply with HD4870 1GB and they don't know when they will receive them.

hi fake, tell me about it!, the graphics card is the last piece for my upgrade and I haven't managed to get one all this week!. No reply from sapphire when stock will arrive. Some retailers like overclockers are listing them for pre-order. Overclockers told me they don't know when they will receive the cards! There's no information at the moment. There are links stating ATI are using the GDDR5 memory for the 4870x2 and have delayed the 4870 1gb. I'm considering the 4870x2 now. I don't know how much longer I can wait.

Yea mate. AMD/ATI don't actually make the GDDR5 memory they buy them from someone else but I'm unsure what company. What I do know is that supply of GDDR5 memory chips are fairly low so it really wouldn't surprise me if AMD/ATI are using them in the HD4870 X2s instead of the HD4870s.

The HD4870 X2 isn't a bad choice mate if you decide to get it, the thing is flamingly fast but I wouldn't recommend it unless you run a 24" or larger monitor as the card will simply tear through everything or every game you throw at it. It's even capable of playing Crysis on Very High settings at 1680-1050 which is just amazing. My mate has the HD4870 X2 and he tells me he's yet to play a game where the framerate drops below 60:p He doesn't play Crysis so we can exclude that title.

GTX280 or HD4870 X2 for high end gaming is the way to go. The X2 trounces the GTX280 but the GTX280 is more then capable of tearing through most/every game as well so either choice will be great.

I was planning on getting the X2 but prices in Australia are just ridiculously high. Before the price drops nVidia was selling the GTX260 here for over $500:o Then ATI came in and kicked nVidia in the steroid shrunken balls with the HD4850 and HD4870 at awesome prices:worship:
