Prize time :O

So back on December 1st I entered a simple facebook competition, all i had to do was say when I got my current GPU it was a short brief comment. I was teasing my mum that was round that day in lots of ways talking about how she should buy me a GPU for christmas just jokingly i tease her a lot at times. I wasn't expecting to win not even remotely even said to her i've got no chance thousands will enter, I got a few giggles out of her that day it was a fun time with my mum we always watch a film on fridays she is my ROCK in life.

So the following day I'm woken up not sure why or by what thought it was the postman goto check nope, go back to bed check phone then figure I'll watch twitch and then i saw a notification on the tablet it says I've WON almost have a heart attack or something in shock get to the PC check properly reply back almost in tears, send details and that was how I started that day on the 2nd, for days i did not think it was a reality it really did take some sinking in, i'm not a well off person no major income it takes time for me to save for items like these.

A week passes by not heard anything, still excited wondering but don't want to pester send a simple message, then the following day get tracking information, it's taken the last 3 days for it to get out of hong kong and to me.

Here is what I didn't expect, I could have won a 5700XT but i didn't I won the 6800 amazing to me to get a card i really really want, i've been vocal on here over the launches and tbh i don't really deserve this tbh.

So today i stay'd up in case it would come saturday, totally expecting it monday, huge box like all padded and foam'd, delievery guy is like it's weird no duty to be paid mate I was expecting to pay something but he said it's strange but nothing to pay on that, so i was already amazed to not only get the card but not having to pay 22% of the cost or something.

I open the box take out the foam and bam real stunned what was inside!!!!

They didn't send me the 6800 no they sent me the 6800XT not only that but the SE version! :O

Yea i am real suprised like idk how to thank sapphire for their generosity it's a rare thing to upgrade someone when the prize was already mindblowing, so somehow i need to find a way to thank them in a good way not sure how just yet but i'll figure it out someway.

It's a crazy world, but the thing i've not always realised is it works both ways good and bad, real shocked atm merry christmas people, do enjoy the banter and conversations and builds on here.

I'm too tired to install it this instant but man i've been so vocal about this GPU over the last few months and to actually have a card that will last me years is a pure gift <3

It's a massive upgrade from 6 year old sli 970's :D

I am going to play the lotto soon just waiting for the zen to build up first :D

Going to order a new monitor since i have spare funds 1440p 144hz HDR10 few other things for friends and family have been done for christmas, made some short calls spoke to my friend next door :)

Thou I'm a little unsure like should I go 4k is the difference and less hz better or is 1440p and the larger framerate really worth it, no more than £400 is my budget for that would like at least a 32 inch screen not so fussed about curved or not, but want a good one have one picked out atm 144hz one but idk enough about monitors really O.o

KingNosser: this is only my opinion, but 4K is a total waste. I have 7 monitors currently, and I've run the gamut, early adopting 4K back when I had a pair of GTX980s. 4K is a serious amount of pixels, and too hard on the hardware compared to any benefit you get. My current "old mans eyes" preference is either:

a) big ultrawide; my daily driver on my gaming rig is a 43" Asus HDR 120hz panel (3840 x 1200), but that's a weird res and it's long and thin. If I had a do-over, I think the sweet spot would be a 35" or so, 3440x1440 HDR, highest refresh rate you can get. I have a pair of 35" AOC 3440x1440 100hz panels, but they aren't HDR.

b) big 1440p screen. Also have two of those (yes I have a monitor fetish), an Asus TUF something, 144hz HDR Freesync on my home theatre rig. Also have a 31.5" Gsync panel, 144hz non-HDR. 1440p panels are MUCH easier on your GPU, better framerates, etc.

It becomes clear when you look at the pixel math:

4k = 3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400 pixels
2.5K? = 3440 x 1440 = 4,953,600 pixels
1440p = 2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels

So 4K is more than double the pixel count of 1440p. Food / math for thought.

I'll look into it more thanks for the info glad i was at least on the right track with 1440p :)

We have lift off, the card is massive like really big :D If it had been one inch longer i doubt it would have fit lol

I've installed the drivers and trixx software, trixx isn't showing the glow feature tab so it's having it's own disco atm all rainbow fans and logos and such :)

Going to start off slow and just do a basic 3dmark firestrike see what it does without touching anything hopefully it won't explode :D

My Ryzen 1700 is holding it back a fair chunk, even says in the drivers for the card that it only meets the minimum spec for the card, but it's still a big upgrade on the 970's over 200fps in the bench below, maybe if i had a better CPU it would go off the charts but for my CPU it's number 1 spot seems not many people have a 6800XT with a Ryzen 1700 :D

Overall I'm pretty happy sure others with better CPU's will do much better but for me it's a big upgrade :D

It seems the more demanding the task the better it performs, didn't see it go above 80C most of the time it was below 70C in them benchmarks and it's pretty dam quiet tbh only heard the fans in port royal :D

The other reason i feel my scores are a little lower than many is I have 4 sticks of ram and I can't run them at 3200mhz the best I can do stable is 2666mhz it takes a chunk off my fps.

Crysis Remaster on can it run crysis settings: Yes! over 30fps slightly better than the 970sli they only managed 7fps :D Pretty sure with new monitor on 1440p it'll be the same fps count, my CPU is trying hard :)

There was me thinking cyberpunk looked good before Holy Batman!!

Such a nice benchmark to look at :)

It's been a really fun day messing around with the card, did a little overclocking have no idea what is good and isn't or how much but had the clocks at around 2450-2550 but in Port Royal it was only 600points more 9600 my ram lets me down a little as does my CPU.
Thou at the end of the day it's an amazing card doesn't struggle at all just chews through stuff and still pumping out 100+fps in most any game other than crysis remaster lol

I had fun :D

Thanks man :)

Tested out the DXR titles that i can BF5, Tomb Raider, Metro Exodus, Control, they all play above 60fps maxxed so not bad really, with a little luck they will be ok on 1440p.

Cyberpunk is the one I want updated atm, but it looks so darn good already that idk if it can look better :D

Of the others Metro Exodus imho looked the best of the rest and i've yet to start that properly so it'll be nice when i do, the GPU fans actually spin up in that game not massively loud but noticable.

For now I have more than enough to keep me busy, but the DXR isn't as bad as most might think on the amd card really not bad at all, if amd can get their version of dlss going then higher res would be pretty sweet and on a lot more titles. In the settings there is some really useful options, I like VRR and freesync a lot but it also has the sort of DSR going on but in games rather than desktop.

As much as I like the driver menu it could be compacted more to have more options on screen at once, but it's a lot nicer to use than the older style nvidia control panel, but nvidia's method works so i doubt they will change that anytime soon.

Edit:

Port Royal OC 9876<my best effort hard to go any higher without a new CPU or some magic with my ram :D

That moment when you connect argb cable to card then discover your motherboard doesn't have an argb connector, stuck with rainbow until trixx is updated atm, it could be worse life has been kind to me lately :D

Edit: Trixx 8.0 released now can change the colours :D Cool blue shame it doesn't have a dual colour option but for me it looks a lot better now :)

5800x getting installed tomoz, i'll very soon have the bios and i'll no doubt update this post with some stuff in the coming days, so after almost 18 months my GPU will be able to fully open the taps with a bit of luck, hopefully nothing will blow up that would suck :D

So the bios install was no issue, cpu recognised straight away, hdd was a super easy thing, took like 1 hour tops.

The bios thou now on my x370 gaming pro carbon is totally different not even remotely the same. The issue i'm having thou is the overclocking if i set everything to auto and login to windows it clocks at 4375mhz and won't boost if i do anything manually it doesnt hold and then clocks at 3800mhz. I have no idea why nothing seems to be working on that side, so for now I left it on auto and after trying to get amd adrenalin to oc the cpu it doesn't i instead went ryzen master. With Ryzen master i can get 4700mhz all core and when only 2-4 cores it jumps a little too 4850mhz temps stay under 85 overall some cores are better than others in the 70's so while not a perfect solution it's better than it not boosting at all :D

Ran a bunch of benchmarks and different things, not going to post as i'm just not happy yet. Saying that the performance jump in some is huge and in others not so much but games like cyberpunk 2077 and far cry 6 crysis remastered's the fps almost twice as much on the avg.

The three games I intend to start sometime soon all play far nearer my 144hz so the cpu is making a big difference in a lot of games, not so much in 3dmark slight bumps some more than others. Cinebench was by far the largest uplift but not exactly a stunner is it, but was close to 15k on multi threaded.

So overall I'm kinda happy least it's working and doing mostly what it should, but the motherboard bios needs either some work or i'm not doing something right and i'm generally good at that kind of thing just nothing seems to stick when i load into windows and then when i go back into the bios it's all defaulted.

Yes i am saving and exiting and even check back and it there but as soon as i go into windows it's not then back into bios and it's gone lol So it's not perfect by any means, but at least i know my cpu can do the all core and 4850mhz isn't bad at all for the temps i feel.

I'm not sure what to do atm but will play some lost ark get 2 days work done in 1 day as i've been up all night trying to figure it all out and came up empty other than ryzen master working only issue is i'll have to open it when needed rest of time 4375mhz is fine until either i work something out or there is some form of next bios released which to be totally honest i don't see happening any time soon, but maybe i'll get a new motherboard at some stage as i'll be on this system as is for a long while now.

tldr it's a ton better than the 1700 i was using LUL

The best part overall thou is my 4x8gb=32gb ram is running at 3200mhz thats the first time i've been able to do that with all 4 sticks and the shocking part for me was that smart access memory is working but idk how much of an impact that is having i was just suprised to see it in the bios XD

So after much playing around and wondering WTF is going on with the bios layout and why nothing stuck, I finally found the PBO settings, Idk why but 3 layers deep into the menu's hidden away and not even called PBO was where it was all along.

I got it running and boosting stable now, I'll tinker with it at a later date, i think i need to know more than i do to mess about with it further than i have but same clocks as ryzen master but lower and more stable vcore. Cinebench score dropped slightly but nothing i'm going to worry about atm.

Main thing is everything working, cause it was a bit of a nightmare at first windows basically thought everything was new and menus flying all over the place lol Idk why but even my Rift S needed a full reinstall to work right so not without it's issues but now all working :)

All the 3dmarks gave a slight bump, but best of the bunch overall was firestrike the basic one over 10k extra over what i had before the cpu switch :)

https://www.3dmark.com/fs/27742330 <37k :)

I'll get around to doing something more intresting over the course of the week :P

Well that went more smoothly than i expected, hot dam it was sexy :D

Moved house yesterday, sorted a ton of stuff and got my PC area set up.

Surprisingly smooth, PC didn't blow up all working so it survived :)

Now live 30 seconds from the beach :D

Just my bedroom to sort out now, but not important i just sleep there and watch tablet for now, but it'll have a 42" TV and PS4 set up in there with a 300watt surround sound, the room will rock as it's a tiny room but can relax in either zone after tomoz :)

Gone are the days where bedrooms were intended for sleeping and s.x. Now they are home studios. :D

So after maybe 10-12 hours of work effort and lots of picking up bits and bobs, case switch done, overall happy enough with it, but some things didnt turn out as well as i'd have liked minor thou.

Next step a SAS card or Sata card to add more storage, but for now i'm fine with what i have, but that was the point of the case expandability.

Biggest difference that i notice is overall temps are much lower and instead of the case fans blowing out warm air it's now chilled so airflow is way way better :)

Cost too much for everything i did in the switch largest being the 2tb ssd £150 rest added up to another £160 with case included.

Thought i'd share thou not exactly a build log tbh but also sometime very soon new Wheel stand to enjoy some racing games with friends Forza 5 will finally get some play time now :D

I looked into them nano leaf lights but wow they just cost too much for me atm lol

Also tempting to pick up some braided cable sets for the PSU but tbh hiding cables in this case not so easy, tons of space at the back but maybe i'll work out some form or shroud for the PSU and drives, but yep tons of space in the 750D puts most modern cases to shame for storage options bar the define 7XL.

Looks good!

Just one thing if you get a SAS Card make sure it's in "IT Mode" and get a Noctua 40mm fan for it or have good airflow, because oh my do they get hot! just an FYI if you didn't know about them :)

oh i didnt know they get hot, i have fans i can put right under it good to know.

8x port SATA PCI-E SAS2008 LSI 9211-8i IT mode

This was the type of SAS card i was looking at but idk if it'll work with windows 11 64bit

or if there is a better option with a sata expansion card, it's a total mine field thou but idk exactly what i want or how much i should expect to pay for one.

the older sas cards are cheaper in some ways with two 8087 cables.

If you have some more solid info I'm all ears as i've spent ages looking so far but did at least work out JBOD or IT mode needed, that much i was aware of :D
