Heya guys,
As MrKambo wants to get into guitar playing, but obviously doesn't want to break the bank on one if he doesn't know he's going to keep playing, he's asked me to get him a custom one, cause let's be honest, those cheap off-the-shelf axes are pretty crap
Besides, this isn't an axe, you could say it's more like a... knife. Cause we're going to make it suit his Knife Build.
"We"? Yes, Kambo will be doing some stuff himself like getting engraving done and we also have something quite special planned from Parvum, so you might find Kambo and JR23 adding to this build log with updates
"But Rick, ANOTHER guild build log? Shouldn't you go to a guitar forum?" Yeah probably, I am looking at joining one or two, but you guys seem to enjoy these logs and at least this one is computer related
Let's start off then! The parts:
The pickguard with the hardware pre-installed, but I'm taking it all out
But first I'm testing some of the black replacement covers
Better. That can go in the mail off to the UK now
The tremolo arm cover was a ***** to replace.
Ended up putting the metal arm in the freezer for a bit, the plastic cap in boiling water for a few seconds and then superglued it on. At least it's not coming off
Also got a replacement cover for the 5-way pickup selector switch
Got some replacement covers for the pickups too. These are genuine Fender replacement parts which is great and all...
...but not when the pickups you're trying to put them on aren't genuine Fender parts  One ended up not fitting as the holes were off.
Don't worry, I can fix this
Roughened up a bit with light sanding paper and cleaned thoroughly
Ready for paint
Muuuuuch better
What? Cheap white stickers on the back of tuners on a black and red guitar?
I think not
Much better
I then took a picture of the paddle headstock and photosouped the background out and gave Kambo some shape ideas to pick from.
Of course he had to go for the Knife shaped one though
I did alter the shape just a little to have more wood on the headstock left to make it 1) more rigid and 2) look less silly. It also now still has the curve in it to make it 1) look more like an actual knife blade and 2) you're now still able to hang the guitar on a wall-mount.
Tightly in the workbench for the jigsaw
a single cut later
Sanded smooth
Started sanding the shape in by hand, can't really mill this wood with the curve in it where the headstock bends down from the fretboard.
Not bad
Didn't make it a full 135° angle by sanding a straight line through the middle. Otherwise the wood would get fragile, you literally have a crappy sharp edge, and the paint wouldn't stick to it.
