[BL] Kambo's Scarlet

Heya guys,

As MrKambo wants to get into guitar playing, but obviously doesn't want to break the bank on one if he doesn't know he's going to keep playing, he's asked me to get him a custom one, cause let's be honest, those cheap off-the-shelf axes are pretty crap ;)

Besides, this isn't an axe, you could say it's more like a... knife. Cause we're going to make it suit his Knife Build.

"We"? Yes, Kambo will be doing some stuff himself like getting engraving done and we also have something quite special planned from Parvum, so you might find Kambo and JR23 adding to this build log with updates ;)

"But Rick, ANOTHER guild build log? Shouldn't you go to a guitar forum?" Yeah probably, I am looking at joining one or two, but you guys seem to enjoy these logs and at least this one is computer related :D

Let's start off then! The parts:

The pickguard with the hardware pre-installed, but I'm taking it all out

oLqyOpe.jpg

But first I'm testing some of the black replacement covers

qn5PrJg.jpg

Better. That can go in the mail off to the UK now

The tremolo arm cover was a ***** to replace.

R8hcS1R.jpg

Ended up putting the metal arm in the freezer for a bit, the plastic cap in boiling water for a few seconds and then superglued it on. At least it's not coming off

Also got a replacement cover for the 5-way pickup selector switch

kZv2bMe.jpg

Got some replacement covers for the pickups too. These are genuine Fender replacement parts which is great and all...

KImwtqi.jpg

...but not when the pickups you're trying to put them on aren't genuine Fender parts  One ended up not fitting as the holes were off.

Don't worry, I can fix this

Roughened up a bit with light sanding paper and cleaned thoroughly

Ready for paint

Muuuuuch better

What? Cheap white stickers on the back of tuners on a black and red guitar?

EP8XOBr.jpg

I think not

IJm2Fh8.jpg

Much better

I then took a picture of the paddle headstock and photosouped the background out and gave Kambo some shape ideas to pick from.

Of course he had to go for the Knife shaped one though ;)

I did alter the shape just a little to have more wood on the headstock left to make it 1) more rigid and 2) look less silly. It also now still has the curve in it to make it 1) look more like an actual knife blade and 2) you're now still able to hang the guitar on a wall-mount.

Tightly in the workbench for the jigsaw

Sanded smooth

Started sanding the shape in by hand, can't really mill this wood with the curve in it where the headstock bends down from the fretboard.

Not bad

TU00eXI.jpg

Didn't make it a full 135° angle by sanding a straight line through the middle. Otherwise the wood would get fragile, you literally have a crappy sharp edge, and the paint wouldn't stick to it.

That's pretty cool. A guitar that would double as a bayonet if a zombie apocalypse ever kicked off :D

Yay!!

Tbh im actually dying to play this, i've always wanted to learn an instrument and these guys talked me into a guitar so its only fair i give it a shot!

Subbed. Loved your last one. Have been playing myself for years (still rubbish), but spend hours amusing myself...

Aye, and not to brag but this guitar is going to be better than any £150 Squier or whatever brand you're gonna buy. And look way more epic! I'll make sure the set-up is all done well so you've got some nice low action ;)

Very Nice!
Cant wait to hear you playing :)

About bloody time it was seen :p

Looking good, Kambo will be pleased

Awesome job on the wood cutting :)

Thanks a lot guys, good to see people appreciate other types of build logs on here as well! :D

The pickup cover dried nicely, one coat really was enough to cover the entire thing (and it's not really anything that's going to be touched once installed in the guitar so it will never really come off either).

Can finally cover that one sad naked middle pickup that looked out of place with either no, or a white cover.

Fits in perfectly, no one will ever be able to tell that it's not an original ;)

Figured I'd spray a light coat of primer on the body to easily find all the rough spots that needed sanding. But before that I taped the neck pocket so no paint would get in.

Poked a hole in the tape to hang it up on.

Now, the reason I put a layer of primer on before even sanding is that in the rough spots, the primer will soak into the wood and become very dark, so you can easily identify these spots and then sand much more accurately. Like so:

The body is supposed to be pre-sanded and treated with a wood sealer, but after a minute of spraying it became quite apparent that it's going to require a LOT of work from me.

"Ready for paint" my arse. I have an idea of how to fix this but it's a long shot, so I'd love to hear some ideas from you guys if you have them!

Woop done some work on the body, filling all the holes with nice white... erhm woops. I was talking about wood glue guys :(

All the tools needed:
- The body
- Woodglue
- Sanding block
- 320 grid paper
- Spare bit of wood
- Bowl of water

0m30tTZ.jpg

First I sanded down the body with the 320 grid.

nFtDOjE.jpg

The primer already seemed to start filling the holes a little, so that's good.

t7I97dS.jpg

I then started to sand the spare wood above the water with very rough sanding paper and made a water/woodchip mixture.

Z8TTogb.jpg

Add glue

Uk8kOrV.jpg

More glue

MNMpRmD.jpg

Basically lots of glue cause I'd been a bit generous with the water.

At this moment it was still more of a fluid than a paste, but considering the size of the holes that was not even a bad thing, so I decided to wipe in on in a thick layer with a rag instead of a metal spatula.

GhO4Skb.jpg

Then wipe off the excess

lhjxtbY.jpg

And now we wait. Gonna let that dry for a day. The wood glue itself says it only needs to dry for a couple minutes, but considering it's mixed up with water which has the tendency to be... relatively... moist, I'm gonna let it sit for a day.

Tomorrow I'm going to sand it down with 320/240 grid again and then trying another layer of primer.

Really nice work, Feronix. I'm sure Kambo will love it!

Oh sanding hype looking good fella.

I was really hoping that this was a Knife update LOL.

Nice work so far.

Rick man, im impressed, actually so excited to use this and annoy my neighbors!

Thanks guys, appreciate it a lot! Nice way for my mates to get custom guitars and me to build up experience and a portfolio like this :)

Going to have one hell of a grip after all this sanding
kyG7sGy.jpg

I can confirm that this is happening already... from sanding of course.

Well, it worked for most of the smallest holes

exBtdEN.jpg

But not at all for the bigger, rough patches.

Back to sanding we go
