Folding on a 970 and 5 older AMD cards. I've been toying with the idea that I need a 1080 now that prices have dropped quite a bit. Replacing a 125K PPD card with an 800K PPD card that probably uses less power seems to make a little sense.:lol:

Dang, I'm sure your electric bill is crazy. A 1080 could probably replace all those AMD cards and use a lot less power...so I say go for it 
Think of the earth! I'd even go a step further and replace your cards 1 for 1 with 1080's. You'd save 6x the power then...right

That depends.
If you were running system 24/7 you would get 7x more points in that time but spend similar W. If you have a target value that you want to achieve you could run them for 1 day and get same amount of points you would get in 7 days with older cards.

But I'm not spending $2500 on 5x 1080s ATM :lol:Fortunately we are on a public utility electricity district so power is much much cheaper than many parts of USA and probably anywhere in Eurpoe.

That'd be more like a PC daycare instead of a farm....but it could work.
Sad to see the numbers dwindling. I do think mining has taken a lot of the focus away from projects like F@H and Seti. It's pretty damn tempting to let your GPU crunch away plus get paid for it, if you catch it at the right time. I don't know how much it's affected our team, but I'd love to see some people come back.
We always see numbers go down in summertime. Maybe they will pick up again when things cool off?

I haven't folded for a year I think. Mainly due to heat in my very well insulated and efficient apartment. I need a Blahsement* (check out Hmmblah's basement thread) and summer lasts for ever here in oz.
I'd say a lot of it is more to do with either mining or living arrangements. I have a new house to move into this Christmas so I'll have an under house storage area that would be perfect for a 24/7 folder.
It's interesting though when you talk of mining lots of things come up like concerns over GPU longevity but not when it comes to folding. Is that down to the fact that miners cram as many GPU's in as possible?

lolI think mining is more short term so the miners don't necessarily care about longevity. It's about mining as fast as possible while the cash is good. With folding there really isn't that concern. It's more about trucking along while being stable as can be.

Plus, mining is much more difficult than folding so it's only a matter of time before people switch. Mining can be pretty back breaking work and has all sorts of negative health effects like respiratory issues. Folding can be done indoors while seated and is much easier on the body. I'll continue to fold in the comfort of my own home rather than try mining and get injured or worse. Not to mention, mining is extremely dirty work and would ruin all my clothes!
