Where Did All the Folders Go?

Just done two WU's to give my threadripper a workout and see what kind of PPD it could achieve. On a 0xa4 core, it can muster around 56k whilst also running one gpu core. The old GTX780 manages around 230k. The i7 4820k that this replaced managed around 18k IIRC. I get the feeling that with the right core, the cpu could manage a lot more than it does.

Sadly it's not likely that I'll keep at it as 4 hours folding has roasted my room. The ambient was around 20 degrees and is now up to 28 and I'm melting, even with the window open.

Is F@H using all available threads? That seems quite low...some quick googling found results of an 1800x with about 120k ppd on an A7 core and about 60k ppd on A4.

Nevertheless, CPU folding just doesn't seem to be worth the heat and electric cost nowadays. As 'blah can attest, A GTX1060 will net you 300k+ ppd at 2/3 the heat output of that Threadripper.

It did appear to be using all the available threads. Probably doesn't help that I was still using it though. May also be my fah install which is about 4 years old and not been reinstalled after I formatted my os.

Well a new client install seems to have fixed the cpu folding rate. Up to ~150K PPD running at stock 1920x speeds. (about 3.6) The RX Vega 56 seems to manage around 510K PPD.

Flashed the bios on my 56 to a 64 air and all good so far. It's bumped up the folding performance to just shy of 700K PPD. (plus the cpu which puts me over 800K)

What's the power draw like on that card?
Based on its reputation, I dread to think. I don't think it's any worse than the gtx 780 I had previously though. It certainly runs cooler in the same cooling loop using ek blocks. If I had to guess, I'd say probably around 250W.

EDIT: Scratch that, it's gone bananas. Obviously got a big workunit or something as it's saying nearly 1m PPD.

I've not folded in probably like 3 years. Ive been under the assumption that the folders switch he'd over to mining when they realised they could be profiting for their efforts :(

I'd be lying if I said the thought hadn't crossed my mind. There really isn't profit in mining though. I knew a guy that had a mining operation so big that the police actually thought he had a marijuana grow operation in his basement because of the electric use. In the end he made enough to break even on his hardware and the electricity. Huge profits definitely are not the norm.

Was still Folding, just for a different team for a while.

Good to have you back!

Think this is the longest period where I've hit 1m+ PPD for an decent period of time.

Also hit over 1.3m yesterday.

Wish I had the money for another 1080Ti to add to the Fold... Pardon the pun.
