Where Did All the Folders Go?

Sorry dude I have been meaning to get back into it, my electricity bills have been ridiculous though. Thankfully now that they are falling I'll get back to folding soon.

I'm still here! Not sure where the others have gone to. Folding has been quiet (as well as this section of the forum), not really anything newsworthy so I think people are just losing interest.

I think you boys need to get together as a team and start posting etc.

Pointless me making a video etc bringing people in with the amount of activity atm.

Thats what I did last time and it just fizzled out.

Alrighty then. Back up and running but I had to seriously downclock the GPUs so the fans aren't running crazy all night. I'll see how warm the room is in the morning :)

Just a shame the client won't let you set a target GPU usage like it does with the light/medium/full CPU load. A new fully featured client would probably attract people back to running F@H in the background as opposed to manual intervention (bet I forget to change GPU profiles) or dedicated rigs.

That's one of the downsides about folding to be honest, If everything is running fine most folders just see this as a blessing and carry on doing other things. The only time you'll see new posts is when someone is testing new hardware or has a problem etc.

To be honest i only look at folding forums once or twice a week and even then its a half arsed look.

Why do people lose interest? depends on the person, but chances are its money vs electricity cost that kills it for most, the rest that start then just stop well they were never really interested in the 1st place and just felt like jumping on the bandwagon without fully understanding what it was to start with, just like a friend of mine who used to call me for wasting so much £££ on it without him fully understanding it then one day he started and made such a big deal about it then a week later because he didn't see mega points or mystery prizes??? he just stopped and nothing was mentioned again lol.

Electricity isn't a huge factor for me TBH I've noticed my quarterly bill went up $30 having my PC here as opposed to my old place. I had no internet for six months while they stuffed around getting the building hooked up to fibre so my PC was offsite.

10 bucks a month for basically a 600W heater running 24/7 is nothing. Most of the charges are 'network' charges to target low power users. Mind you our building is super energy efficient - hence I notice the heat leaving the pc running!

It's like anything - there are people committed to the cause that will fold all the time regardless. There are people just trying it out because it's a good cause but it may not be for them. Power/Noise/heat can all detract from running 24/7.

I set myself a goal of 10M points and got to it and stopped for a while. I'll probably do the same again. It's fun when there's someone close to your score you can have an unofficial competition with. I was neck and neck with someone for a couple of weeks so gets you motivated to beat them.

I just really need to get a build under water so you can run it in silence.

As far as the forum and the team - just a gentle reminder now and then should prod us into action. Or the occasional email to the group if that's possible.

I was folding on my old AMD FX4100/ HD6790 system and our Intel Q9000 Laptop and our bills were noticeably higher by at least £25 - £30 a quarter, at the moment that is just not an option. I'm hoping that with the new 4790K and SLI 950 system it will be lower being that they are much more energy efficient, I'll give it a bash this week and see what the old KWH meter says.

I do miss folding though I had tat hardware but was chuffed to bits when I hit my first 9,000 PPD, not a lot but it was an achievement and I felt so proud.

Yeah I was surprised actually about how little our bill changed. Mind you they charge a 'network' fee and infrastructure and then the actual usage is billed pretty cheaply. Might well be different in other countries.

I ran with downclocked cards and temp wasn't too bad when I got up.
Did 73,000 points overnight so that was about 10 hours.

TBH I found the software and waiting for support for stuff to be either too slow or a right royal PITA and thought if they can't be stuffed to get things running properly I can't be stuffed supporting them, it shouldn't take over six months to support a GPU sorry if that sounds a bit harsh but people are just too busy to sort through stuff that should be sorted first

I stopped folding last year when we had some building work done, as the electricity supply was on & off on a regular basis. Unfortunately electricity in the UK aint that cheap & my current setup was woefully inefficient. I need to buy a gpu, 970 would be nice, but I just can't justify the cost atm. I haven't spent any money on computer tech for a while, as other things seem to take priority...

I hear that :( even with a 960 & 950 the bills aren't exactly cheap, mind you might also have something to do with chasing down other team members why the bills have been high
