Vista out already?

Vista will be good for 64-bit supported games as well. At the moment performance is generally compromised though, but no doubt they'll fix it in the final release.

I'll probably wait a month or so after it comes out before even thinking to get it, wait for all the kinks to work out :)

There isn't any OpenGL support in Vista at the moment which is causing problems on the games front.

Precisely.

For now, the Nvidia beta drivers prove far more useful than the ATI ones. Nvidia can at least implement opengl in vista, whereas ATI has no support for it at all, so most games either won't work, or will be extremely slow.

I tried Lost Coast on my X700/A64 system, in Vista it was horrid, got probably .5 fps or so at a guess, definitely not more than 1.

Be nice if an OS went into semi-hibernation whilst u played u`r game.

i remember seeing a script a while back that stopped all system services that werent necessary whilst you were gaming.

That's precisely what Windows needs.

The Amiga used to do it, because the core O/S essentials were ROM based. All you had to do was bung in the disk, power up and the game pulled the required bits from the ROM in able to run. Because Windows relies so heavily on being a disk based O/S and HDDs are nowhere near as fast as RAM or a ROM, that's where ya slow down is. If memory became really really really cheap, like £5 a gig (wishful thinking I know), then I can see it being viable to release windows on a flashable ROM type card. WHOOOOOOSH;)

LMAO, wouldn`t it be a turn around for new games to come out that would wipe the floor in terms of performance of regular pc games - however, after installing it u needed to select it from the OS boot screen, meaning zero overheads >.<

(I dunno, it`d get all the driver info at the time of installation whilst in windo$e and slim it`s costs down or something)

lol dream world #@''':~~~sss/pk

So if a game's meant to run on XP will it run on vista?

Or will switching to vista mean having to start from scratch with your games collection?

No not at all! DX10 will be backwards compatible with DX9 games; you'll just miss out on the eye candy and performance enhancements associated with the newer API afaik :)

I like each successive OS, but it was a bummer to find out that the new file system was ditched (or only used in the server version of Vista). Of course the biggest reason I want Vista is for Halo 2.:D Played it a few times on the Xbox, but without a keyboard (w/speedpad) and mouse I SUCK, my days of using a controller went out the door when I made the full-blown switch to a pc-for-everything world...;)

2007 the year microsoft takes over the noobs!

Vista is not going to be worth it... Its just a super XP thingy.

Plus its SYSTEM HUNGRY! I need my system for preformance not to be wasted on my OS.

It hasnt been created with current gen hardware in mind, it will be aimed at future hardware, e.g DX10 etc.

In the case of DX10, you have a choice of Vista or no DX10. CSS played alright on Vista when I had it on my laptop.
