The OCZ Phase change cooling system

This post has got me wondering:rolleyes:

Has anyone here heard of or used cryogenic coolers before. Some equipment I work on has got them fitted as standard, they are quite small (about the size of a shaving foam can).

I suppose they would work but I've never seen the cooling specs on one before.... The reason we don't seem them in the enthusiast market would be due to one of a few reason.

A.) It's either FAR to cold (meaning something unruly like -300+*c) where no CPU can withstand temps that cold.

B.) It doesn't cool well enough.

C.) The technology is just far to expensive for any of us enthusiasts to get our hands on.

I would assume one of the above reasons is why we don't see them for computers.

They are used on thermal imaging devices we have to keep the lens cold, but the draw back I have just thought of is they need a constant source of compressed air.

The other major factor is that they are VERY expensive-normally military use.

I was just wondering if someone had tried it , it may be that they get too cold though.

liquid nitrogen has been used for cooling before now, problem is that a huge amount of it is needed for a small amount of time.

Liquid nitrogen is what the extreme boys use to get the huge OC's on a regular basis.

Yes expensive, yes a waste of money but hey it gets pwnage OC's :)

Liquid nitrogen is CHEAP in the states... I mean feckin' cheap... If I had a good area to setup a nitro cooled benching comp i'd totally do it.

Shit at that crazy low price it'd be worth it to pay someone in the states to ship it via UPS for $150... I mean that unit is fuckin CHEAP.

Meh, thats still expensive, as tax will be added on as well and would make it work out around $530, which is almost twice the price of the original unit :\.

Yet still $300 less than the nearest competing unit.

rofl @ $299 i'm gonna get one for every computer in the house! ;)

I cant believe its that price. Roughly converted thats £180, my water cooling cost more than that!

When they out in the UK. I want one NOW.

Finally your calling will be answered Jim! You can have a second child AND a phase change unit :D w00t w00t!

Yeah, best of both worlds :D

I can't help but think there is some kind of catch with these units (like really bad reliablility) or sommit :/ Seems too good to be true.
