Sensible to now wait for Haswell/1150?

I've been using my trusty old Lynnfield i5 since the middle of 2009 and it's served me well but the recent launch of Ivybridge has got me thinking about an upgrade.

However I'm conscious that Haswell is due out in Q2 2013 so I'm wondering if I've gone this long without upgrading whether I might as well wait another 10 or so months?!? Another factor, and I'm not sure if I dreamt this one night, is the new 1150 socket which I understand is being released to support Haswell.

Anyone else in a similar position who's decided to postpone their upgrade to next year?

If you don't need to upgrade, i'd wait it out. Will be around this time next year before Haswell is out though, which should be a new socket, 1150.

You could always buy a SB setup for now, just the motherboard and CPU, use all your other hardware and then sell the lot come the time Haswell is released, which should give you most the money you need to upgrade your whole system for what ever the best GPU, quad channel RAM etc is at the time.

Ask youself if you actually need to upgrade or not. Is this for general use/gaming or something more serious like video/photo editing or business? Truth is that if it's the former you can skip a generation or two before you'll notice the improvement and if you haven't been worried about it during Sandy's lifetime then I really don't think you need to consider it with Ivy since it performs no better. Haswell will likely be a larger improvement and worth waiting for.

Maybe consider other upgrade options like an gpu upgrade (it's a good time to sell 570s second hand and the 6xx/7xxx are worthy successors).

If that doesn't appeal then I highly recommend a weekend break to Rome for two. It's great this time of year

People here often forget to state the most important factor: What is the PC for?

As stated above, if it's for gaming, then you will benefit from new GPU and some extra ram maybe, in case you only have 4 GB. If, however, you need the PC for editing or any other CPU intensive stuff, you might as well benefit from SB-E system. I am still rocking on i5 750, slightly oc'd with 8gigs of Dominators, and have recently upgraded from 570 to 670. The system eats BF3 for breakfast, and that is the only thing I am concerned about really (and Diablo III, but even my laptop can do that). Next on my list is an SSD, and I am happy till Haswell comes. Ask yourself if you really need some extra 5 - 15 fps in games for the price of a new system.

I'd wait for Haswell yes. Its exiting and maybe mutch better than IB

If you need a monster get the SB-E. Dunno if theres going to be an Haswell-E? Sieb, is it?

I fully agree with most of the posters. If you don't really need it then why not wait and get haswell or even the shrink a year later. windows 8 is coming at the end of this year too.

Of course, if you like to upgrade for the fun and excitement of something new and the money is not an issue then go for it and get some parts you can recycle into your next upgrade. case, power supply, blu ray burner. Maybe wait on mb, mem, cpu, cooler, v-card and ssd. If money is tight only upgrade on need and get the most out of what you have. Even if you have some to burn maybe you want to put it somewhere more impactive first like buying that 55-65 inch hd tv you want and using it for your new monitor. would recommend staying away from plasma though to avoid screen burn.

Beautiful worlds pal, thank you very much... I had that SB/IB in the back of my head for a few weeks, and you just gave me peace of mind.

Only 7 more months to go :D
