Post Your Bootup Time

good job but wouldnt be suited to my needs:

8.3 file description is used by norton and a few of my other programs. it would probably mess a lot of things up.

i need system restore cos i tend to fuck up pretty badly sometimes ;)

if media player core gets rid of mediaplayer classic then i would never remove that. it is microsofts best app by far lmao. i use it over wmp10 any day.

16 bit compatibilty is needed for one of my games (sonic :P)

and when ya get blanks u owe me an office cd :P

1. Ditch norton and use NOD32 - Now no need for 8.3

2. Take a backup of your newly installed rig using PQDI - Now no need for Sys Restore

3. Install Winamp or other superiour media player - Now no need for WMP

4. Stop playing old games, or get them on a 32bit emulator such as mame - Now no need for 16 bit compat.

If you happen to have purcased a £2k license for Win2K3 Enterprise i will ;)

Otherwise, i can do all these hacks on XP for ya if u want.

1. tried NOD32 and it crashed my whole system and i couldnt log in.

2. need to use sys restore to recover ferom nod32 error.

3. already have itunes but use wmp cos ive never known difference. might get winamp though.

4. sonic is not old and will live forever.

You couldn't do that on XP Pro could ya XMS?

I would really fancy installing it onto a SATA drive to take a look and then run as my OS!

Would my CA Trust EZ friewall still work on it?

you would have to either look on the net or do a small test to find out if it uses 8.3 file names. u now what they are??

Yeah i'm just testing it on VMWare at the mo, and once i've finalised an ISO for 2k3 i'll get one for XP sorted. I'll be needing somewhere to host a 300mb file, and a photo of your license before i give it to you tho ;)

Ohhh Arrr....I be not a pirate mi mateys...Oohhh Arrr!!!

Hi kempez815 :)

If you have a NTFS formatted disk volume with many files with long names, you can improve your machine's performance by turning 8.3 file names generation off.

To be backward compatible with MS-DOS and Windows 3.x applications that use short file names (which are limited to 11 characters or 8.3 short file names) Windows NT has to generate short file names out of long file names. If you're using NTFS volumes, it does this short name generation every time you save and perform other file operations such as retrieving the directory. All of this could contribute to performance losses if you have more than a few hundred long file names in a directory. So, here's how to turn off this short file name generation:

* Run the "Registry Editor" (RegEdt32.exe)

* Select

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem"

* Double click on "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation"

* Change 0 to 1

* Restart Windows

NOTE: Use this option with care! If you still use 16 bit applications, they may not be able to find certain files.

I'd rep you if I could!

Turn that into a guide PV where more people can see it... It probably won't get much love sitting in this thread :)

I get 28.2 seconds to desktop, including RAM test and some SATA test crap :wiggle:

Not bad for 1.8GHz and 512MB RAM?

Whoa. FFffafaaaaassstttt. It's gonna take me forever. This Promise FasTrak SATA/IDE Controller (MEGA FAST w00t!) Has its own bios, so that has to boot and search for hdd's too, plus realtek's giga-bit lan has to search for boot devies to, cos this mobo can boot from a network hdd. (Neat-o, eh?)

So, it will take me 45+ Seconds, most likely.

:). Thats really fast, dude. Wow. I timed it, 43 Seconds. Not bad. Especailly when I restarted because of windows update needing it. That usually takes longer.

14 seconds from cold boot to logon screen

2 seconds from logon screen to useable desktop

Mainly thanks to my stripped Windows

Jees - that's fast XMS. Nice one.

Anyway my 29 seconds does me. It only take like 5seconds to load after that so its all good. After I've OC'd my CPU it'll be a bit quicker too. :D

After a fresh format it only takes about 7 seconds for mine to boot completely up, does that count? rofl
