oh for the love of god why!!!!

ah right well try the re-seat first fella altho i dont think it would boot but its worth a shot.

then if its the same re-sintall windows

what motherboard are you using? im guessing the bios is deffinetly up today and all settings are default too? It is more than likely a windows problem although you say it picks up 8 processors? but only 2 are functioning reinstall windows if the reseat doesnt work and give us an update

He said his memory is only showing 2GB as well. That's a sure sign the CPU isn't seated properly, some of the pins aren't making contact thus not allowing the system to see all memory channels.

This is a common problem with i7 chips, this is not the first time I am seeing this. Again, if the BIOS isn't recognizing the CPU right, how is Windows going to see it properly? CPU-z and task manager both see one CPU and two threads. I'm guessing that the 8 cores device manager is seeing is from when it was working properly.

Get it working in the BIOS properly, then worry about Windows.

Indeed, but I dont understand how one day his cpu can just unseat its self lol unless he moved it about or had a little play inside because it was working correctly at one point yes?

Yes everything was working fine the only thing ive done is move around cables bexause im getting ready to drill sone holes in my case

In plastic or metal? If it's metal you really should take everything out of your case. The last thing you want is metal shavings getting stuck behind components.

When my CPU wasn't seated properly (once) the PC wouldn't work at all, so I don't think it's that. I think his CPU is knackered and needs RMA on it. Sounds like you've damaged it mate by accident. I take it you only changed the GPU's and not the board or anything else?

Just trying to help

These boards with the pins on them are different. Each pin is basically a tiny spring. If a pin is bent slightly or a heatsink is on too tight, some of the pins may not make contact with the CPU. Memory channels dropping on an i7 install has happened before and reseating fixes this. It might not be the OPs issue, but it's a cheap place to start and a whole lot quicker than reloading an OS.

^^ Agrees completely. has anyone known the 1366 socket to have the same problem as some of the early 1156 sockets though? I.E. the bad cpu sockets that foxcon produced for the 1156 didn't make proper pin contact and overclocking would heat up the poor connections and fry both cpu and motherboard. It was something anandtech was tracking a while back and verified.

ok heres what happend, when I first built the pc it didnt recognize all the memory and put it in dual channel and also I only had 2 coresm I got it fixed and had all 6gb and 8 cores BUT I couldnt play a game. I will not hesitate to take my hole system back and scream at them, Yeah I changed the gpus around but I got my system back before christmas with the 460s and I still couldnt play a game and it still looks crap when I played, NOTE I have a rampage 3 extreme just to let you guys know if that helps

Did the shop you brought it to ever explain what the fix was?

all they told me is that I mounted the cpu cooler not tight enough and the metal from the screws shorted the board thats why it wouldnt start nothing else was said, however I kept the reciept and I have a years warranty I theres somthing worng with my cpu can intel replace it? what about my mobo its says I have 3 years warranty aswell

Warranties don't usually cover misuse. That's your call though.

I'd reseat the CPU like I've been saying all along or bring it back to the shop and have them do it before you try RMAing anything.

I prey theres not a problem with any of themm, AND just to mention it when I got my pc they broke my dam door hinge unlocker so i cant put the door (without the the windoww) back on
