New Custom PC - Oppinions Appreciated

Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to consider reading this. Any opinion is much appreciated!

I'm a flight sim enthusiast and with the new IL2:BOS coming out I'm planning on thoroughly enjoying it.

I'm also going to use my PC for video recording plus editing and a little bit of 3D rendering through kerkythea. I'm hoping to have a stable but over-clocked system (CPU mainly) whilst maintaining decent temps and as quiet as possible.

I made the mistake of ordering the Corsair Carbibe 500R case a month ago because I would have really liked to have fitted the Corsair 105 Radiator with a push pull system.

The only thing in my mind I'm not too sure about is the graphics card. Is there something better out there for the money?

Anyway won't bore you too much check it out and tell me what you think!

Thanks again.

That's a pretty nice choice for graphics card bud.

If you want some other options then 1 would be the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB WINDFORCE Video Card: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn78toc3gd - It normally runs about £492 to £540 depending on who you buy it from.

Another would be either of the Titan models like the Asus GeForce GTX Titan Black 6GB Video Card which runs from about £761.81 (that includes the S/H costs) to £781.42+ (w/ free S/H) depending on who you buy it from.

Alternatively, you could go for the Asus GeForce GTX Titan Z 12GB Video Card
with has double the on-board memory of the Titan Black but is a lot more expensive. I can run you anywhere from £2317.82+ to £2398.94+ Unless you're super rich, I'd avoid this card. :|

I'd just stick to the 780 Ti and get the Gigabyte WINDFORCE version that has 3 fans + 3GB of on-board memory. If you need more than that, just SLI 2 of them together.

Hope that helps you out.

If you want loads of Vram I'd reccomend the Sapphire vapor-x 290x 8gb version. Pretty pricey though. It also maxes out at 70c so the heat thing isn't an issue.

Otherwise you're fine although I'd be more tempted to look at a different 780ti as you can get better for the money imo. The Inno3D iChill runs super cool and OCs like no-ones business. Cheaper too.

Thanks for the replay Kagetora, You've defiantly grabbed my attention with the 780TI Windforce, seems to run very cool much like the Asus GTX 780 Ti 3.0GB Platinum Video Card.

I'd love to get the Titan Black OC Edition but it's just a little out of reach unfortunately.

I might even consider over-clocking my graphics card as well. How important is this when considering reference or non-reference cards? I'm just considering the silicone lottery.

I'm just going to leave this here... ;)

Thanks Barnsley. So many choices and I have so little knowledge about graphics cards. I suppose it's one of the most trickiest components to consider.

I'm always weary of brands I've never heard of. Never too sure what to expect from them, that's why I stand clear of them but I suppose the proof is in the pudding and that Inno3D does run very cool. Time to put some more research into these suggested cards. I think I'll be running these from stock so that's something to consider.

Anyone else want to put their two cent in by all means please do.

Aye, it does and I agree about watching out for unknown and unfamiliar brands as one never truly knows how reliable they are. Still, I agree with Barnsley, that thing sure does run cool and that's what you want in any card. :D

Looking at your list i would opt for the mx100 512GB SSD over the LX drive. Its cheaper:p

Though on the GPU front depending on what software and which games you perfer go for the 290x or 780ti. For the 290x get the Sapphire card as Barnsley stated or the regular 4GB version, or just stick with any good 780ti.

Love this forum thanks again everyone. Great advice NeverBackDown. I've had a look at the specs and it's a no brainer. Replacing the Corsair SSD for the Crucial 512GB MX100. Thanks for that.

Someone suggested I should try and keep to the same motherboard manufacturer when buying a graphics card. Is this really nessasery and if so what would you guys think of this card?

theres no real benefit from doing that apart from aesthetically.

i've been getting alot of people coming into the store i work saying the same thing, where has this been written? lol i wanna know

Thanks all for abolishing this myth. I wasn't convinced, that's why I asked.

Sorry noob questions ahead.

What are the obvious benefits to having a card with more VRAM? Much like the one YouWhat suggested (http://www.pcnation.co.uk/product.aspx?id=13902&af=11). Because when I compare this card to a lot of 780Ti's it's actually better on paper and would be a no brainer. But a lot of the 780Ti's have much higher clock speeds.

Seeing that I'm not planning on overclocking my GPU what should I really be considering in a card? Mind you if that card keeps very cool it would be a shame not to overclock it. Even worth considering SLI in the future maybe?

Higher vram just allows you to use higher resolutions, textures, AA, etc. As more games start to use 64bit code they will use up a lot more.

Also that link in your post to the 780... ya it is a hell of a lot slower than any 780ti lol. Just less vram is the only negative thing against the Strix card.

Thanks! NeverBackDown.

You've all been really helpful and I think I have enough info to have the confidence to pick a card.

I'll let you all know which one I've picked later on. Just in case someone knows better.

Cheers!

Plus if you are SLI'ing or Crossfiring the ram is only used off of one card. So if you have 2 cards using 3gb of Vram then they may not have enough where as 6gb can share that ram further to the benefit of performance.

Uh they don't share anything. They each use their own memory pools. If you have 6GB of vram on both cards you can only use 6Gb of vram. Same with 3 and 3, 2 and 2, etc. Adding more vram does not benefit performance. It only helps improve your gameplay when you are capping out your current vram pool because it is not enough. Adding more just gets rid of that problem.

I'm defiantly not doing SLI or Crossfire. One decent card will be fine.

I'm actually struggling to decide what's best for me. I need something that is fast out of the box, quiet and runs cool. When it comes to specs I will hold my hands up and admit I don't have a clue when trying to compare one card to another. I'm looking at the £500 to £600 range.

Best I actually research what I should be looking in a card.

Well sadly not much with PCs is out of the box.. you got all those driver updates. If you can find a 290 for cheap then that is the card to get with a Tri-x cooler or the Vapor-x one.
