Here are the details outlining my new project.

Firstly Im going to pop down all the components that I am planning to get for this.

At the moment I still haven't selected a case - so if anyone has any particular preference input would be welcome.

In short the components are the same as the ones outlined in the signature but just to clarify....

Thanks in advance

Hey mate

What are you going to use the rig for? Is it gaming?

If it is then you'll be wanting a better graphics card than the 6600 - try a 7800GTX 512mb or an x1800xt 512mb

PSU is ok but maybe try a Tagan Sli - they're rock solid

I didn't know if you've considered it - but a decent Opty 180/175 would perhaps be a good choice of CPU??

HDD: I would say that the WD is a decent HDD but don't see the point of a 500gb SATA drive when you can get 2 x 250gb drives and put them in a RAID 0 array - meaning far faster performance and a total disk space of 500gb

I'm just looking for a good case for you (bored at work ;))

EDIT: Try some GSkill RAM too mate

EIT: Link for HDD:

Link for GSkill RAM (second down):

Or this Sexy crucial RAM (Ballistix PC4000):

EDIT III: I like the Lian Li's in here as well:

And also the Silverstone TJ03: http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_1230.html is a lush case :)

A few things I noticed from the get go which should definately go into consideration for change.

Firstly the PSU. Hipers are decent, and nothing more than decent. If you're going to run an SLI or CF setup at some point I definately don't recommend it. Look in to Tagans, Antecs, OCZ's, or PCP&C's.

Secondly the vid card. Are you talking about the 512mb 7800GTX? There's no 512mb 6600?

Thirdly the mobo. Why get a CrossFire board if you're going to be running nVidia cards? SLI won't work on an CF board or vica-versa unless you are planning on getting a 6600 as a temp card until you can afford a pair of ATI CrossFire cards. If you're going to stick with nVidia check out the DFI LanParty SLI Expert instead.

Fourth the sound card. Don't waste youre money on anything that says fatality on it, you're paying for the name and nothing more. Look at a slightly less expensive alternative that will do the job just as well, like the X-Fi Xtreme Music or a different card all together like the Bluegears HDA Digital X-Mystique 7.1.

And finally the RAM. I'm not sure but it's been a while since Corsair has put a truely pwnage set of sticks. I haven't kept in the loop very well on the new 1gb stick phenomenon but Corsair probably wouldn't be my first choice. I guess the Crucial Ballistix 1gb sticks are currently king of the hill in the department unless things have changed again recently.

Just a few tips and suggestions! Cheers.

No - just don't bother getting that its a POS

the 6600 chip is crap and the memory will slow it down even further

No point bottlenecking your really decent system is there?

With gaming you need the best possible graphics card and the processor doesn't matter as much

So try an x2 3800+ and an x1800xt - those will play your games much better (even if your holding back a bit on the CPU. Mnd you - those 3800+ are getting to around 2.7ghz overclocking :)

okaydoke

I will spend a little time looking at the info you guys have come up with.

Then I will come back with a revised draft.

Cheers

OK,

having taken note of your suggestions, here is a revised edition.

Any further comments, suggestions?

:wee:

Case : Gigabyte 3D Aurora Silver Case

PSU : OCZ ModStream 520W

Motherboard : LANPARTY UT NF4 SLI-DR Expert

Processor : AMD Athlon64 x2 3800 Dual Core CPU

Memory : Ballistix PC4000 DDR 2Gb (2 x 1024)

Graphics card : Nvidia 7800GTX 256M

Soundcard : Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music

HDD : 120GB Western Digital Caviar SE (OS)

: 2 x 250GB Western Digital Caviar SE

Optical : Sony DW-Q30A

Nice mate - that is a real good system :)

Getting the DFI SLi-D would save you a bit of cash, much the same with a few less features - but meh same sorta thing :)

With the PSU I'd get a Tagan SLi as they're more solid than the OCZ Modstream - much more solid :)

Now that setup looks MUCH MUCH better. Only suggestion would be the same as Kemps about the PSU. The Modstream is a decent PSU but not a solid overclocking performer. Check out out the OCZ Powerstream lineup or a different brand such as Tagan as Kemp suggested.

Cheers mate! It's really starting to look good now!

££££ ££££

Tell me about it. Look at my system setup...tot it up...add in some games and an OS.....

Make £3500+

Re - revision!

Awesome - can't go wrong with a sweet setup like that mate - you'll be very happy

Then overclock it :)

Did ya think about a case/CPU heatsink and fan (you HAVE to overclock it) :D

Overclocking is something I am considering.

To be honest I haven't overclocked anything in my life so a bit of reading needs to be done first!

I thought perhaps I could put some kick ass cooling system in there for the sake of it but then again, not really necessary!

Yeah ya have to overclock it - get a CPU that performs at the same speed as one for double the price....for nothing apart from a bit of time :)

Mad not to really

And a decent cooling solution you can't go wrong with :)

OK I could get everything apart from the Case and the Memory from CCL.

The case and memory from Kustom with a guestimated delivery cost is

£313

The cost of everything else from CLL is

£1,168.55

That gives the total of

£1481.55

So while we are at it - would anyone like to add a cooling solution recommendation?

Plus any information that will educate me on the art of overclocking lol

Cheers
