Marshall 18W Build Log *FINAL PICTURES ADDED!* 56K!

I wasn't sure if I could put this in the Build Log section so I'll stick it here! ;) (If a mod wants to move it feel free!)

I've long been considering a nice low power valve amp (tube amp to you yanks out there :p ) and after reading about the best of the best - the handwired Marshall Plexi - I figured what the hell! I'll make my own!

I've been in contact with Barry from a UK company called ampmaker for a while, he's a great guy - very helpful - and I decided to go for a kit he offers called the PP-18. Its essentially a classic 18W/Dominator circuit with high/low inputs and a simple volume/tone control layout.

After researching the company a bit online I found out Barry used to do a conversion kit for the PP-18 called the SL-18, modeled off the TMB Super Lite Marshall. This kit is no longer produced by him, but after a lot of persuasion he agreed to make me a one off! The SL-18 is based of the same circuit but uses a treble/middle/bass/gain/master volume tone stack - and as I'm after a Slash-ish tone I wanted the extra gain!

I also added the components for a little doo-hicky called a VVR (Variable Voltage Regulator), which should allow me to get that cranked Marshall tone at a more ear/house/neighborhood friendly volume :)

So yesterday the components turned up

There's a lot! (Did I mention this is my first major electronics project? :p )

But I soldered on regardless! (see what I did there?) Starting to build the turret board - OCD SKILLS ACTIVATE!!:

And by the end of the night -by that i mean almost morning today :p - I had myself a completed turret board! (I didn't solder just yet as I want to double/triple check everything):

It's a good Job I double checked!! A few of the resistors I was sent where the wrong values! Also is something missing?
YmrNC7J.jpg

Yes!! Barry must of forgotten to stick my VVR components in the box :headscratch: Barry was ever helpful as usual and is sending the parts he forgot out today at no extra cost :)

I also got the chassis work for the PP-18 model finished up - Mounted Power transformer, Output Transformer, 4x valve sockets/shields/retainers, and all the controls - Barry recommended me making the PP-18 schematic first, then converting to the TMB model after initial testing to aid with troubleshooting :)
Notice there's no front panel? :p Don't panic it's simply because I asked Barry to ship only the SL-18 front panel to save money as I won't be using it :) (Does make it rather confusing to lay out by guessing though! )

So that wraps it up for today! When I get back form work i'll be adding the wires to -and mounting - the turret board and soldering all the components I can together :) (gotta wait for a couple of replacements)

A couple of weeks ago I also commissioned a head shell to house my amp from another British company called RoadKill Cabs, I'm going to keep that bit as a surprise for you guys ;)

Teaser (Although there will be no silver corners in my build ;) ):

Keep tuned!

Apologies in advance for the double post but all you lurkers out there aren't replying! :p

So last night I got all the leads soldered to the underside of the turret board and fixed all the components I could in place on the turrets (Turns out only one resistor was the wrong value :cussing: - of course meaning I can't progress with the main audio circuit until it arrives :( ) I treated myself to a nice heavy weight helping hand (soldering aid) which made it a breeze :) :

Seen as though I have done all I can do on the turret board for now I figured I may as well start on the chassis wiring! So last night I got the EL84 and ECC83 valve heaters wired in off the 6.3V tap and I also wired up the PP-18's High and Low inputs - notice they are just floating in the chassis for now; The SL-18 has only one input (but adds a gain knob) but I decided to go by the book and wire up the complete PP-18 even though the inputs will be removed and replaced to convert it to the SL-18:

That's all for today guys! There's only so much fiddly wiring you can do in one night before your fingers are raw :p Tonight I'm hoping to complete the chassis wiring - Speaker outputs, fuse, IEC socket, pots and switches - and I'm going to have to drill out some holes in the turret board because the standoffs in the chassis don't quite match up! :)

My Valvestate is sat in the corner with no valves :( they are sooo expensive these days, still have my 1950's Yamaha amp that's almost bomb proof. Subbed to this now I like learning something new.

wow, that's gorgeous! and amazing! :) be interested to know how much this has set you back in total. Definitely keeping an eye on this.

Nice, been meaning to build one of these kits for about 2 years now and will finally be able to get the 5w one in the summer. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

WOW! the tinkerer in me loves this! subbed!!
I've been a serial tinkerer since a very small age ^.^

Valves are cheap dude?

Thank you for the kind words ^.^ all the components come in around 300 - including all the new tools and chassis :) (not including the head shell though)

Looking great so far mate! :)
Make sure to make a video on how it sounds when you're finished! ;)
Thanks Av :3 I'll be making one after I've built the first stage hopefully :) then when I've finished it, and of course when the cabinet arrives :)

Mmmmmmmmmmm... lovely :)

If you don't mind me asking, what setup will this powering?
Thanks! :D I've got a closed back orange 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30's that's peaking in the pictures :) and I use various ibanez' with boss and akai custom pedals :)

Go for it :) Barry makes a great kit, I did consider the tweed :3

Sorry for the double post again!

Last night I finished up pretty much all the wiring for the PP-18 :) I wired up the valve sockets and circuit board, volume and tone controls (will be changed in the conversion to the SL-18 controls) I just need that one dang component to finish it off!

As you can see i had to wire up the PP-18's input jacks outside the box! (there's no holes :p )

That's all for now :D

*edit*
Sorry guys I couldn't get any work done tonight :( my parts still haven't arrived :(
