LGA2011 Voltage Question

Ok, well, until I learn how to directly link YouTube videos, I guess you guys had better click on this ...

Now, firstly: I realise I probably shouldn't be linking this video as, in a way, Tom and Linus are kind of competitors at the ol'YouTube Reviews etc. - but this video completely through me off.

Through months of diligently watching Tom's videos, and scouring the forum, I have come to terms that when I DO finally get along to building my own system, a system that shall be overclocked, 1.4v is the recommended option for a 24/7 system. Well, for Sandy Bridge, at least.

It surprised me, therefore, that good old Linus over here is pumping 1.55v through the 3960X. Is this normal for a Sandy Bridge-E chip?

My apologies if this has been covered before,

Regards,

Josh.

I vote he is insane. Maybe if he were talking about running just a few benches or something, but it seemed to me like he meant 24/7. And that is on an H100, with peak temps of 90 degrees c. So yeah, I vote insane.

Not to mention but did he say 4.6 ghz? Why the hell does he need 1.55 volts for 4.6 Ghz? i thought the SB-E chips could hit 4.8 Ghz no problem with like 1.4/1.42/1.45 if you had a decent chip. The reviews i have read is that with a decent cooler 4.6-4.8 should be attainable with "relative ease".

Now i have never overclocked a 3960X, but my guess is that 4.6Ghz should not be too tough if you know what you are doing, and it should not require 1.55 volts, and if it does, then you should not be running your chip at 4.6GHZ.

Well, from what I gather, if he's trying to use 1.55 volts 24/7, I don't think his chip is going to be overclocking much at all in the near future.

Now, i'm going to be throwing around some buzzwords here, but I believe electromigration comes into effect (yeah...no idea, but from what i gather it harms the chip), so I claim insanity also.

Yeah there have been reports, even one of Tom's chips, of Sandy bridge chips failing to be stable after a some use with higher volts (they had low temps), but not anywhere near 1.55 if i remember, i think Tom had a 2600k at 5.2 or 5.0 but now it wont go near those clocks. I'll try to find the quote. Ah yes here it is.

1.4 is what Id say with decent cooling, a little more if on water. But trust me push higher and the chip do degrade.

Ive got a 2600k that did do 5.2ghz... too much raping and now it wont go over 4.6ghz for love nor money...

I expect that the SB-E chips have similar tolerances.

That crazy Canadian...

I wonder if he realises that his advice has possibly endangered the CPUs of many a YouTube viewer.

Not only that, his own rig is most likely at stake. Not good, not good at all.

Thankyou for your reply, by the way - glad to see that my horror was justified.

Wow, and again wow...that guy's CPU will be melted if electromigration doesn't get to it first. Mine sits at about 1.39V with all the loadline calibration and whatnot on at 4.6GHz. 1.4V I'd say was the 24/7 max.

I don't mind what he does to his own rig, but there are a lot people that look up to him for their only source of tech advice. Gonna be a lot of red hot processors out there round about now.

Noticed after watching again,1.4v SA he recommends

That will kill the cpu in a very short time

Tis a shame - Linus is actually the one that first drew me into the world of PC Building.

I guess it was his videos that came up first and foremost from my YouTube search...

So it saddens me that this advice is being chucked around.

I think at the end of the day he is a reviewer that is trying to sell products so his priority is to sell things so by doing a demonstration like this its to get people to buy stuff from them not give people advice

I laughed so hard when he said "conservative overclock"

In all fairness, it is rather a conservative overclock...just not a very conservative overvolt.

The conspiracy theorist inside me says that the more CPUs are burned, the more CPU replacements shall be bought from NCIX. But, I quickly push such thoughts to the back of my mind.

After all...I actually like Linus

I don't, he is annoying in my opinion. That is why I started watching Tom. His reviews were more thorough and less scripted (therefore more entertaining, i don't know about you but i have sat through like a bunch of Tom's reviews with no intention of ever buying those products.) than 3dgameman's (with less emphasis on removable motherboard trays)and he does not sound like Linus.

I have a friend who shares your view of his annoyance, but it's a view I do not have.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer Tom tenfold - his reviews are so much more in depth, unbiased and pack more information than my Maths paper.

Linus is more of an "unboxer." He can't touch TTL when it comes to in depth reviews where every little detail is revealed in a hilarious and informative manner.

Yeah, I am aware of this.

But it worries me that when he does do in depth tech showcases, being the frontman for NCIX, that he should be giving out this information. The H100 is a serious piece of work; no processor should ever be getting up into the 90s.
