help needed please

hey guys long time viewing on youtube first post

in HUGE need of help

with xmas coming up i have scrimped and saved to to give mt nieces a gift they will love .. the gift of a pc.. is there any better gift to a teenager ?? :P but i have struck a problem .. im not rich i dont have endless money .. i ordered a case with 500w psu that comes with it ... problem being is the psu comes with a 4pin cpu power cable .. the motherboard takes 8pin .. can i run the 4pin in an 8 pin socket (1155) and stay stable ???

specs

mobo = P8P67 DELUXE
cpu = INTEL CORE I3 2100 3MB
gpu = gtx 460 sli

budget is very tight for me and it makes the difference between them getting it or not as i cant afford a new psu :(
 
It will fit - only on one side though, the pins are keyed. Essentially you will only be able to draw half the total wattage possible - but with a lower end CPU like that, shouldn't be a problem. A higher end i5 or i7, no good. Plug it in and try. I assume you are not overclocking either? :)
 
thanks a lot for the fast reply .. i know the cpu isnt powerfull but since i was layed off times are hard .. would it cause any crashing problems ??
(rig would mainley be for minecraft so no need for a top end spec .. but would be a great gift all the same)

I take it you have some "no name" 500w PSU? And running SLI? Might want to think about upping it. You are right - if it does pull to much because of say SLI, then yes, you could have some crashing. But, the 4 pin should work and power it up...
 
well thank you very much for the replys and so fast :)

i fingered as the cpu TDP is 65W and a 4pin gives 75W (i think) i hoped it would be ok .. but good to get a second opinion :) thanks a lot for your time :)
