SSD disappearing?? please help.

Well that just means a hardware fault, but given that it's happening across multiple mobos and cpu's i'm more inclined to think it's the nvme drive itself than anything else, does it have any cooling on it or thermal pad how old or new is it, these things can fail as much as they are better and no moving parts.

Idk if there is a way to test the stability of the drive, but first thing i'd check is a drive test on it's speed to make sure it's getting somewhere near where it should, plus if it crashes in that test then it is 100% the nvme drive, plenty of apps to check that like crystal etc.

problems like these can drive you a little crazy as it can be hard to pin them down, I had issues after the HBA card install but it wasn't related to the HBA card but the antivirus I was using at the time, these things are not always very obvious to track down and solve, but imho at this moment i think it's something with the drive as the rest you have been switching out etc.

Do check your RAM and your PSU as well, after watching Greg Salazar's "Fix or Flop" videos, many issues has been related to these 2 things. Even though one at first thought wouldn't suspect them at all. Like PSU can cause some real instability, with random shut downs etc...

Stupid question... but its not your actual SSD right? I didnt have patience to read through the pages.

RAM could also be a problem, there are slim chances that your RAM is not compatible with the mobo.

To give you a quick run down based of just having a quick scan through the thread myself again for a reminder as this has been going for a while for Scotty.

"Multiple drives plugged in to the motherboard, ranging from NVME, to 2.5" SSD to Spinning rust.

Replaces a Sata M.2 with a NVME M.2, then because they were still cheap buys another and replaces spinning rust drives.

Starts running in to issues around the *Storage Drive* disappearing from Windows until a reboot is completed.

Drive was RMA'd, new motherboard and CPU purchased but issue persists."

@scotty if there is more than that please add to it :)

So here is what I am thinking since I have been having abit of an issue with NVME drives recently.

I bought a Lexar 1TB NVME drive to use for Windows and other things in a PC that I use for Discord and OBS.

When I put that drive in, it wasn't detected in the Bios or Windows it's like it wasn't there.

Check Asrock's website and the drive doesn't appear on the list of "Supported Storage" list.

I then began a hunt for an AMD B550 board that would support it because well, I was planning on upgrading the system from a 1700x anyway, so this just game me the excuse, one 5700x purchased and time to find a board.

I checked nearly all the B550 boards and the first and only one I could find that shows the Lexar NVME drive in the list is the MSI B550-A Pro, funnily enough the MSI B550 Pro supports the 250Gb version of the drive but not the 1TB version, but I could not find another board that supports it.

So what I am wondering is

1st is the drive on the supported drives list for the motherboards in the capacity?

2nd of all, since you went from running Sata Drives with 1x NVME and a GPU to running all NVME and a GPU, could you be running in to a PCI-E Bandwidth issue?

3rd as mentioned by others could the ram be faulty and causing the BSOD which just coincidently be triggering the NVME's to disappear?

4th could the PSU have an issue delivering the power required to the board to drive all the drives, might sound crazy but I have seen crazier things

Could also share the BIOS settings/screenshots for the PCI lane sharing, SATA drive setup etc. Possible there is an issue there with the lane sharing. Usually M.2 slots are shared with PCI slots, so if you have something in second slot of the PCI e.g. a second GPU or sound card, you cant use the M.2 slots on the mobo.

I think this is why ASUS now design a DIMM slot for NVME drives etc. My wording might be off because its early morning brain fart storming.

I guess all of this has been mentioned already however. But... has a fresh windows install been done? Disk Management / Boot Manager may get corrupted at times. Usually happens to the C: drive where windows is installed but it could also affect additionals, which is why you sometimes wont see them.

e.g. if you swapped SSDs where your windows install is like moving from Sata1 to Sata 4, the boot manager might not like this and want if back where it was before. It can do the same to any drive, additionals drives wont affect the windows boot up, but they also wont show up.

Thanks for all the recent responses to this but I think I have figured it out.. I am going to wait for another week or so without any hiccups before I declare victory.

And annoyingly it’s something so simple and I’m kinda annoyed that it has taken so long to figure it out.. so I have cable extensions on my 24 pin, 2 pcie for gpu and the cpu power… I have removed the one from the 24 pin and have not had a problem in the last 4 days.

OK so yeah.. ever since I pulled that 24 pin extension I have the issue of the PC blue screening and the drive disappearing has gone. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

BUT I am certain my PC is possessed as a new thing I keep getting graphical artifacting but only on webbrowsers. and when I trurn off hardware acceleration it stops. I do not get any issues in games.. very strange

Good news then for the drive disappearing and the BSOD's.

About the GPU, but I would first reseat it, then just make sure the power cables are connected properly and monitor cables are connected properly?

Have you tried running the likes of 3dmark, heaven etc to see if it's artifacting in them?

I pray it fixes your PC.

I know it sounds unrelated, being a GPU "thing" but I also had storage issues. I could access and read files fine, but as soon as I started to try and copy a 400gb SSD onto the new 1tb (both SATA) it would do what you are describing. In the end I gave that up, and bought an external USB case for the 400gb and will complete it now that I have fixed the PC.
