Heatskink for IHS'less processor

Guys,

I've hit a bit of a dilema.

I'm going to be shifting back to air cooling for a month or so..

BUT

I've removed the IHS off my processor. So this pretty much rules out any heavy heatsinks, and also ive been told that the xp-90/xp-120 wont work as it doesnt make proper contact.

Any suggestions?

Well, if you look around XS a bit, you'll see the 2 favorites (and for aircooling period, not just naked cores) are absolutely the Scythe Ninja and the Thermaltak Big Typhoon. If you have a side breather hole, near definately the TT BT. If not, the Ninja may be the better way to go. The Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 is also supposed to be fairly decent <shrugs>

Edit: 1 post... Best Cooler for IHS-less chip thread at XS

u can have my stock fan and cooler from my 3500+ if u want jim its never been used

Cool cheers for that - i may well be in contact ;)

I wonder if it will make contact with my chip properly :/

get a Big Typhoon. I had it on four lidless processors till now and it works PERFECT. No harm , no damage. U will have to buy separate mounting screws though. The dfi bracket isnt as long as normal NF4 , so u will need different screws. Check out the XS air-cooling section and search Big typhoon. U will get all the replies u want.

Yes, as clip style heatsinks have to be clipped one side at a time. Once you get the first side clipped and roll it over the core to clip the other side... CRACK... Nore more processor :(

At some point I'll get up the guts to pop my IHS. Not till I get a job though... :(

It's worth it mate. Once you get around to doing it you'll wonder why u didn't try it much earlier on. The possible performance gains are outrageous, it's what saved me from RMA'ing this 180.

I was gonna pop the IHS on my 165 a couple of day ago but:

1. I chickened out

2. I didn't have a razor blade to cut the seal :(

Maybe I'll try it another time.

What kind of cooling do you have, and what's ur current setup?

Look in my profile... or alternatively if you can't be bothered.. Opteron 165 + TT Big Typhoon (dangerden maze4 mounting) + DFI Ultra-D + X1900XT :)
