Pi TV

Had a very busy weekend. Got the USB mount all filed down to make the USB ports fit as well as the power buttons.

Then got the front sanded down with some abrasive paper, starting at 400 grade working up to 3000, making it very smooth, even though you can see the lines from the 3D printing but I don't plan on staring it that often so I don't care.
I can paint it to cover it up and match the colour of the TV more but I'm not entirely decided on that yet. I want to make it look good, but at the same time, I want to actually finish it soon, as well as that it costs more money.

Anyhoo. Been spending today soldering for the first time in about 6 years. I was planning on showing my handy work. But it's shamefully bad. Like properly terrible.

So I got the Pi booted, installed the code that allows the Soft Off switch to work, shut it down and connected the supply switch and pressed the on switch To my surprise, the LED came on, the Pi started normally and it ran perfectly fine.

Then came test number 2. Pressed my off switch for the soft off and behold, it shut down. 2 minutes passed after the Pi shut down and the relay clicked cutting power to it. Works exactly as planned.

Tomorrow will be the day where everything starts going together. The stand will be fitted inside the TV and final prep work will be done! Hopefully by the weekend, I will be playing games on it properly

Nice. Panel looks good man.

Thanks dude, I've decided not to paint it for now, but I will do at some point.

Got the main stand glue together and installed, couple of the marks were off but simple run with the drill and it fitted quite nicely. Except for the cables, shortest I could buy but still a little long, but hell, it fits and as I've said before, used the gaps underneath the stand to route cables where I can.

Lastly, the emergency off button arrived and I quickly got the jumper cables soldered on it so it can be fitted to the side of the TV so it's out the way and I can't accidentally push it, but it's still accessible.

So now it's fully assembled, passed the first power on test and now to see whether the thing actually works...

Pressed the green button and..............

.....nothing! Turned out, it would have helped if I actually connected the button's cables to the wire on the PCB (do'h!)

Opened it up, connected it, put it back together, pressed the button and boom! It started up, the light came on and everything came on screen! I got it loaded with some ROM's to give it a test run! I will note. I own original copies of all the games I'm posting, I don't encourage pirating games you don't own.

And there we have it! My Pi TV is complete and works perfectly! It has been a great project to work on, and I would say, if you love retro games it is worth it. However some systems aren't brilliantly emulated like the N64. NES, SNES, GameBoy, MegaDrive and PS1 all work brilliantly, some work like the original hardware, others have bugs but most aren't noticable.

Fantastic project! I've got a 3D printer this week and I'm looking at getting a raspberry pi to integrate :D It's so awesome being able to design something, print it and make it in a few hours!

Thanks everyone. It works brilliant, spend all of last night playing a few games, felt great being able to press Select + Start and switch between systems and games. Most likely will spend all of this weekend playing more and more :D

Check out Octopi. I just set it up this morning, but loving it so far. Going to make 3d printing so much better. Need to add a cam to my pi though for a live feed.

Love your project. I have a RetroPi I set up, but not integrated like yours.

That OctoPi is a pretty neat idea, connect it to a little touchscreen and you have a full control suite for the printer as well as the live streaming support.

and thanks mate. It is a great thing but I will say because of the space needed for cables, mounting and stuff, you are quite limited to what you can integrate it into. VCR TV's are the best, DVD CRT TVs at a push or a normal CRT providing it has space to fit. Flat screens are pretty much out the question.. unless you plan on modding the entire TV casing :D

I'm not using a touchscreen on the octopi. I just connect to it via web browser from another device. Will be nice when I get a cam attached so I can remotely check on a print from anywhere and stop it from the browser if need be.

I stuck my RetroPi in a plastic NES looking case. I've given a few of them as gifts now and my friends have loved them. With the 8bitdo NES30 wireless controller it's a sweet little set up. These older games do look better on a CRT though. Some things don't look quite right on an LCD TV.

Uh oh. I hope the hardware is alright.

The Pi itself is fine thankfully, really cannot be bothered with doing a clean RetroPie install. Mainly an annoyance especially with the block coming out the slot

Not sure why but the USB cable that fell back doesn't work anymore. Meh that's only about £1 to replace so nothing of value lost. However, having the block out and more time on my hands now. I might finally get it painted to match the TV
