Dont want a HDD in my PC, alternatives?

You could use an external HDD around 1TB for general data, and then a NAS drive for larger less used data, like pictures etc. Or set up your own file server.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a NAS and how does it work? what type of speeds can it achieve? e.g. play movies straight from it without lag etc?

May I ask why you don't want any HDD's?

1-2 TB's of SSD storage will be very very expensive.. I guess it also depends on if you're looking for one gigantic SSD, or a couple and RAID them. For example, "Crucial" do a 960GB SSD but I cannot and would not recommend it to anyone, ever. For SSD's you should only want Corsair, Samsung or Intel. Don't get a lower name brand SSD as you could have problems later on.

It's my suggestion that you pick up a 500GB/1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD for general use and then also pick up one large/ a couple SSD's.

+ That link doesn't work.

i dont want 1-2tb of ssds thats the amount of space i needed and i was wondering if i could get some sort of WIFI hdd for that but it appears thats not viable yet so i might just buy a single 3tb HDD and stick it in my rig somewhere outof sight

There was a wireless router that came out about two years ago that was specifically designed for home network storage. I know it could hook up at least 2 usb drives and I think 2 eSata directly into the ports on the router... I don't remember the name or brand but I remember it was blue LOL I don't think it was linksys tho... So it is possible just need to find it...

I use a seagate goflex nas drive http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/extern...ertainment/media-sharing-devices/goflex-home/

I bought it from maplin but they dont seem to be on their website anymore.

If you do use one of these its a lot faster if you use a wired gigabit ethernet port, even then it wont be as fast as an internal hard drive.

Over wifi it will be pretty slow. The one you linked doesn't specify the speed of the wired ethernet port so i guess it is 100mb.

If you only want to access the files from one PC use an external hard drive with USB3 if possible.

What about USB3 external HDDs how do they perform compared to normal internal wired ones? might just get one of them instead?

The only problem with them is as well is i wanted to eliminate the noise of the HDD do any external ones have good sound dampening?

Why all this NAS/USB talk when 99% of modern motherboards have an ESATA port that will give you full SATA speeds?

Just get an external ESATA enclosure and bung a drive in it.

Yeah makes sense, do you know any ESATA enclosure that dampen sound a lot?

No but even if they don't you can quite easily do that bit yourself mate using some of this.

You can probably even find it cheaper elsewhere given QuietPC are not known for being very cheap.

TBH you'd be hard pushed to find any external drive with sound proofing so it's definitely a sound idea (pardon the pun  ) to put one together yourself :)

There you go, ESATA + USB3. So that way you could try both and see what works better :)

Finding out is easy, just download ATTO disk benchmark and run it using both.

Appreciate your help i'll begin my hunt down!

seagate momentus xt hybrid.
i had one in my laptop. was really good.
boots into windows just as fast as the ssd that replaced it.
i believe the new ones have twice the flash memory now as well.
