Cooler for amd a8-3850

Not that long ago i made a mini itx build for my dad. It has an AMD a8-3850 in a Lian Li PC-Q08 on an Asus F1A75-I deluxe motherbard. It's very noisy and i think it's the stock cooler. So i have decided to give him a new cooler for christmas. It has to be pretty cheap, silent, not more than 10cm tall with a fan on, and fit on the motherboard without covering the pci-e slot. It's easy enough to find one that meets some of those requirements, but none that has met all (only those very small ones that can't handle such a warm running cpu). Anyways, thanks

Id have a look at one of the face down coolers dude, Scythe do some that are pretty cheap and thats probably going to be your best bet with suxh small space and budget requirements.

The Scythe Big Shuriken isn't that tall but it covers the expansion slot, and i doubt it would even fit in the case since it probably sticks out of the mobo. Their only cooler that probably wouldn't cover the expansion slot is the Samurai-ZZ. It's 94mm tall but i don't know if that's with the fan or not. It says the fan is 25mm in the specification so i dunno.

Prolimatech Samuel 17 or Thermalright axp-140 ?

Thanks dude, it looks like the Prolimatech Samuel 17 might just fit nicely. It is a bit pricey though. The review in this site said it was okay for 95 watt cpus and down, but the 3850 is a 100 watt. Is it still good enough?

I think the Scythe has a few low profile coolers. I believe one of them is called the Shuriken? Also, Zalman has a few low profile top down styled coolers too.

I think the Shuriken will cover the expansion slot

Those Zalman caught my attention. I haven't looked that much, but it seems like they should be able to fit without covering the expansionslot. And they are alot cheaper than the Prolimatech

They just look a bit small and i'm wondering if they can handle it. What do you guys think?

If you're running with stock settings, the Zalman coolers will be fine with the APUs. The great thing is the AMD socket is compatible with each generation of mounting brackets.

I'll research a little more about them. As long as it runs within respectable temps and is pretty quiet it should be fine. I've read the aluminum one doesn't cool 100w cpus that well, but the copper one should do a decent job. Also, it should be a bit noisy and it comes with a separate fan controller so the fan doesn't change speed manually.

I was able to use the CPU fan header one of my motherboards to auto control the fan speed. It wasn't a 4 pin PWM fan header either. It should be fine. From that system of mine, it usually stays within the 1300RPM range until the room gets too hot or the system is sufficating.

I think i'll go for the copper one. I measured the clearance and it is covering a bit of the expansion slot. But if he want's to populate it some day, we will just cut some of the heatsink off. I swear my dad had one in his pc at work. Damn shame we threw it out

I have a Zalman CNPS7500-CU LED in my HTPC, and unless you dial the fan right down as low as it'll go then It isn't what I would call quiet.

Dont think any Zalmans ever are.

As long as it's a lot quieter than the stock AMD heatsink it's fine. The damn thing is loud even when idling.

It will definitely be quieter, but as Tom mentioned Zalman coolers are never quiet.
