That is just fookin crazy ok I just got 2 6800u's in sli I dont realy see the gain ok games are smoother etc but the only gain is in benching ???? hmm my mind keeps thinking duel 512's lol :D

4 cards=NO.

Sorry, but its gettin out of hand. I`m guessing Fattys peeved as well coz thats the first time iv seen reference to swearing here.

The only thing that bothers me is that game developers are gonnna start using this power for their games, and we`ll NEED this kind of setup to play future releases. SLI is still pointless for the masses who are stuck at 1280x1024 or less.

4x £500 for a GRAPHICS setup??? Plus a new monitor to take advantage of it?

SHOVE 4-WAY SLI UP YO` ASS. SIDEWAYS.

Sorry. Saw the anouncement earlier today and have been gettin more wound up ever since.

quite the crazy...i wouldnt shell out 2 grand for "smoother" games or larger numbers...also what is up with the 10 teraflops of performance (ps3)?

But look at the xbox360 3 x 3.2 ibm cpu's ffs and 10 terabit bandwidth then they say the playstation 3 is even more powerful????? the mind boggles

this is going to ruin benchin completely its bad enough as it is trying to compete with limited funds . its not about skill anymore its about cash .this fookes me off completely bring back 1 gpu

Can you imagine that, 4 6800Us with a nice toasty Smithfield, you would need like a 1kW PSU and a case made out of fans lol.

I am disappointed when i see this sort of thing, i admire the technical achievement as putting it together aint easy, but i also see it as ingenuity giving in to sheer power and force, just like saying:

"This thing doesnt run this fast enough"

"Shall we think of a way to make this thing better"

"Nah, let's just use lots of these things all chained together and that way we will get enough power"

Seems to be the way most things go in the end though.

I agree with all - I can't see anyone buying these apart from harcore benchers and the seriously affluent. I think I'm going to buy just one card from now on and forget SLI or AMR (or whatever its called now). The only reason I bought two cards for SLI at the moment is because I run 1920x1200 res, with next gen cards supposedly outperforming two 6800u's one should be fine. And for those of use who bench we can set up sub catorgories for how many cards we are running etc

What does peeve me off though is how one single next gen card will cost us more than a XBOX360 or PS3. I know both Sony and especially Microsoft will loose money on the consoles they sell when they first come out but its still rediculous when you add up all the other components one needs for a PC.

Also weren't gigabyte releasing a single card with two gpu's on. The mind really does boggle - you could have 8 7800ultras giving you more performance than 16 6800ultras! Everyones 3dmark05 scores will look like last years Aquamark3 scores! :p

See...IMHO its ok to SLI at res like that, there would be a benefit to it.

Theres already intelligent perspective on the lack of a point to this but heres some wider scope....Theres kids starving in Africa and companies are about to try and persuade us we need to have £2000 of graphics power to play a computer game. Even if I had the money, I`d like to think i`d have the decency to spend it slightly more wisely, else I wouldnt be able to sleep at night.

Not that I wish to draw any conclusion but...

"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers."

- Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943

I have travelled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processings is a fad that won't last out the year."

- The editor in charge of business books for Prentice-Hall, 1957

But what...is it good for?"

- Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, 1968, commenting on the microchip

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."

- Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of DEC

"Indeed, it would not be an exaggeration to describe the history of the computer industry for the past decade as a massive effort to keep up with Apple."

- Byte, December 1994

Need I go on.....

True, but theres a flip-side to that... The tablet PC for example. Err..... cant think of any more at the mo...brain is fried, just had a horrible horrible exam :(

Screen was too dark, battery life was nowt wonderful (still a drawback to laptops, IMHO) and the cursor was never QUITE directly under the stylus. Other than that, and the price, they were fine :)

And its still much faster to type than scribble. :)

Humm. Which versions??? We have 7 of the 1.2GHz versions and they work great out in the feild for out maintenance chaps + I have a 1.1 version and think that its brill...

But like most things, some people hate them and some people like them.. The Skoda for example... Would rather walk.. But some people love them...

Oh well

This sorta goes with my comments on £550 for a processor yesty, I started overclocking and benching out of fun, trying to get the most from a reasonably priced setup not designed for the job, nowadays you can just go out and buy a stupidly expensive rig for you to willy wave with and then use for listening to music and surfing the internet. (Not couting Phil's rigs as they are well worth the money, I'd MUCH rather have a rig from here than Alienware, SavRow or the like)

I'm looking forward to the new consoles simply for the fact that the developers HAVE to squeeze the last bit of power out of the architecture as it never differs as opposed to the "advancements" (loose terminology is an understatement) in GPU technology displayed here which I think encourages developers to code with the same logic as the card manufacturers (Nah sod tweaking the code, just make the minimum requirements a 1 Thz Pentium MXLVIII with 20 7800 Ultras and more RAM than a Welsh Sheep Stud Farm)

That is a good point, but the thing is that game makers want to sell their games to as many people as possible, which means they are unlikely to set the minimum specs too high.

Also, as games tend to take several years to make, by the time games come out that use all the "advancements", all the mid and low range cards have the ability to use the "advancements" and play the games relatively well.

Anyone who buys a rig from Savrow or somewhere like that is strange in my book, very few people need the power you can get from such rigs, so apart from having a large e-penis i dont see the need, and also they are prebuilt, so it takes all the fun out of them.

If I have a ridiculously powerful system then I want to at least say i built it myself. After all, it's the most fun part :)

I believe that the the 2x GPU's on one card in SLI with 512MB RAM each is about the limit for me.

I am just looking for an excuse to get the 850w P&PC PSU.

Any more than that would be stupid :D

Hey Mav. Need an excuse for that PCP+C? Buy yourself some 320W Pelts or maybe decide to run a vapo or similar as well as your normal system from 1 PSU :) That should do it!

Hmmmmm. Have you thought about building a second system in the same case using a M-ATX board? Use one beefy PSU and have the 20/24pin mobo plug split to feed 2x mobos? Thats also re-assuringly silly :)

I was thinkin about it till I got this Vapo that I gotta try and fit into my case, so I`m hoping to convince someone else to take up my old challenge :)
