Novice ! I am setting Router MAC address and hoping, but BY reckon it can take up to 24hrs to accept the new one. I may be gone some time ....gorby said:

Also had to register Ethernet card MAC address after spending 30 minutes on 'phone to Phillipines with Linksys. Then had to wait for Cable modem to realise I was back on USB connection

Im not sure mate, I put the addys in when I received them, but I didn't install it until a few days later (got em wednesday, waited until weekend to actually hook up).
I'm redoing my entire network this weekend (wiping router etc) though mate so I'll note down anything I have to do that isn't in the manual.
I take it you have hard reset the modem ? as in remove power cable from it & leave it off for 30 secs or so ?

Yes, several times what does this actually do? I needed to do it when reverting back to USB conection AND disable the ethernet card - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!mcmad said:

Resetting your router does a lot of stuff. The most important thing is the refreshing of all of your wan settings. (dns, gateway, ip etc) I havent used a cable modem set up for a while, but the principles are the same. Why do you have to use usb? Do you have to have the modem or router directly connected to a pc for it to work, or can you plug them into a hub / access point with an x-over cable? If you can avoid the usb then i would recommend it.
I dont know if this will help but the basic network must have this...

I think the usb cable on ur modemis to support connecting without a router. You will not have to connect both cables. As long as the cable modem is a standard ppoe device then you will be able to get away with just connecting it directally to the router via rj45. The router will detect the connection state and act as a gateway for your network. Just make sure that the router and modem are on the same local subnet. ie router = 192.168.0.1 and modem = 192.168.0.2. You will have to infrom the router of the modems IPstandin wave said:
hmm, thats a bit different to mine, I dont have to tell the router about the modems IP, mind you by the sounds of it your cable modem is different to mine, I dont have a usb connection.
I literally plugged the BY cable into the modem, rj45 from modem to router, rj45 from router to main pc, rebooted & that was it, ran the software, set up whatever ports are needed & off it goes..
but like I say I'm redoing mine so will take notes.

The procedure i described has happened automatically on yours beacuse your router and modem came pre configured with the same subnet.
if the router and modem are compat and on the same subnet already it will happen automatically as you experianced
it all depends on how complicated you make ur setup. If you want proxys hardware firewalls etc, you will have to start defineing settings manually

one thing Ive just read elsewhere, the usb & Rj45 on the newer BY modems have different mac addresses ????
if this is right then it sounds like this is your problem, you will prob find the engineer installed it using usb as its easier for them.
maybe gorby can confirm this as I'm an auto network kinda guy but I reckon you need to register the rj45 mac addy with BY (cant see how they can have different mac addresses but like I say I'm no network engineer). How you would go about finding the mac addy for the rj45 is another question

Hmm sounds strange. Im only generalising here but they probably take different mac's to signify what connection ur using. I dont have any personal exp with these modems but i do have lots with general networking.
They probably take different macs to tell blu yonder how ur connecting. Ie, if you connect via usb blue yonder will know to drop the line when the pc is turned of. Typically if ur useing rj45 the modem will be 'pc independent' so regardless of pc state the connection will stay up. This method is so much better as you can share your connection without having to designate one pc to perform the task. So really its a naughty ploy of blueyonders to save bandwidth on their servers.
Can you log onto the modem via a web interface?

I'll try - have registered the Ethernet NIC AND the Router MAC addresses, so just hope blueyonder have pulled their finger out and they will work! Be back later tonight

again dont know exactally how windows treats this as a lot of manufatueres have pretty mental over elaborate solutions for makeing a usb device a network adapter. but......name='mcmad' said:

Its not going well I was on the phone to Linksys again last night - still no good. The WLAN light is on (continuous) on Router, tried it 1ft apart to 10 ft apart tried 4 diff channels on Router. Any ideas what to try next?
