peeps, when I get the new PC built, I'm gonna want to connect the 1st system via a wireless network to access printer, cable modem, share files etc. What would you recommend? How much? Where from?

Just do a search for Linksys and find the cheapest prices.

reet, make a list of what you want to connect together, roughly how far apart they all are (any think walls etc between em ? ) & Ill do a little shopping list for ya.

mcmad

system1 near cable modem (currently using USB 1 connection)

system2 desktop, about 15m away through a fair amt of brick and concrete

system3 laptop, up to 25m away

epi d'ya know the model number? is it OK for file tfr between PCs and printing to a 'server' printer? I forgot to mention that I dont want to have to leave the Mach II GT system on 24/7 just to use net elsewhere

k m8, this is what Id recommend

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router/4-Port Switch (from cable modem to router , I assume cable modem has network connector RJ 45, so wire modem into wireless router).

Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter for sys 1 & 2 (although sys 1 can also be hard wired into router if its close enough, router has 4 wired ports).

Linksys Wireless Printer Server - usefull if you dont want to have a PC switched on to use the printer, will appear on network all the time.

Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adapter for laptop (depends on laptop exactly what card).

I would also suggest an access point somewhere in the middle of the area to ensure good signal strength Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point (you can try without this & get it if signal strenth is low, set this to repeat in menu as far as I can remember).

I have a WRT54G.

I have the other half's laptop and mine + the kids PC on wireless and my PC wired in.

Its fine with what I do and transfering files is good.

Good buy as far as I am concerned

Ordered

Linksys WRT54G Amazon £58.62

Linksys WMP54G Amazon £36.07 together plus £8.97 P&P next day

Linksys WPS54GU2 Insight £97.51

Linksys WPC54G Insight £45.53 together plus £11.69 P&P next day

will post on how easy it all was to get working - I also cheated and got "Linksys Networks - The Official Guide" (n00bs edition) :D

Thanks for everyone's advice

network update

Installed WMP54 PCI card into system 3, no probs.

Got Ethernet card for System 1 & installed it. Then, removed USB connection between cable modem and USB prot and installed WRT54 Router with RJ45 cables between cable modem, router and PC. Searched for the address they say 192.168.1.1 or something, set up the Router apparently OK. However, can't see internet - dont know if the cable co (telewest) need domain info etc or if I need to determine MAC address of the Ethernet card or the Router?

Any ideas - trouble is every time it muffs up, I can't quickly retrun the setup to working USB route to ask questions :o

I think you need to register the MAC address with BY, you can do this on the BY selfcare page.

address should be on sticker under router
