Which processor?

I was looking to build a 8TB home server over the summer. The purpose of this build is learn more about servers OS, RAIDs, and servers in general (Plus backup and media storage).

But I've being flopping around trying to figure out what processor I should go with...all I know is I want to run with onboard graphics

CPU - ?

Mobo - ?

RAM - ? (4GB)

1- WD VelociRaptor 150GB (debating on getting a SSD...)

8- Samsung F3 Spingpoint 1TB

1- LG DVD burner

1- Adaptec 6805 (probably a little over kill for a home server, but I figure it was a good chance to play with one)

1- CORSAIR 650HX

will be running Win 2008 R2 or Ubuntu (never used either)

All in a Fractal white R3

In all this is a learning build

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Jordan

Any ways, I would get the best value for money i3 at the time you can get and a motherboard with 1 or 2 PCI 16x slots on it so if in the future you can pick up a cheap raid card for it and have more HDD's.

A few questions.

is it only going to be for a simple home server and storage box? if so you would get away with 2GB of RAM, If you are going to run VMware and/or game server on it you might want a bit more maybe even get a i5 CPU. So is this server only being a file server? if not what else will it be doing?

Server OS installs are a lot smaller than windows 7 installs I would go for a SSD over a 10,000RPM HDD and if you are going to install large applications like a game server and/or VMware on the server I would install all these to a second "application" HDD.

Why are you choosing 1TB HDD's? 2TB are the best value for money and 4x2TB HDD's will leave you more sata ports free for future HDD's

And final question.

Got a budget in mind?

i would go for a cheap amd x4 with maybe 2gb of ram and ubuntu.

1tb drives have a much lower failure rate so is the best choice atm imo :thumb:

@yggdrasil

My plan was for it to be more then just a file server, but also a media server stream so 1080p movie and music. I didn't even think about game server, although I get all my game off steam. But the Virtual PCs didn't even think about that, I could have some real fun playing around with that.

As far as budget I was aiming for around $1,500 (don't include the OS, love being a student -Dreamspark<--Free Win 2003/2008)

^

Note: Haven't test the download but I'm praying it works

EDIT: also have the case so exclude that from the budget

@marsey

That what I was thinking, but I don't know now AMD x4 compares to an i3 or i5

oh intel are faster clock for clock but for this use you would be wasting money where you wouldnt notice that extra performance, money which would be better spent on more ram and storage imo. if you are going to play with some v boxes on it you will want plenty of ram

AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz = 100$

MSI 870S-G46 = 78$

Kingston 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 = 37$

and I think you should go for Ubuntu

Id just get an i3 and a Z68 mobo tbh, those hard drive will drive you nuts, too loud and too noisey. Get some 5400 RPM 2TB drives. Its also worth thinking about raid so you have some security.

If you go down that route youll need a raid card though. Check out the WOW-STorage server build / thread that I did for Hayley

+1 for a server home server a i3 is more then enouth.

Not sure what the hard bays in the R3 are like, but you might want to get some foam or rubber to reduce vibrations. Also instead of getting 1TB Spinpoint maybe get 2TB WD Green or the Samsung Green equivalent since they are cheaper byte for byte, run quieter and consume less power, which is what you need in a home server.

Also GET A SSD BOOT DRIVE!

With RAM, while 4GB is all you really need. 8GB kits are fairly cheap these days so you might as well get 8GB imo.

You are right about the drives, there not too noisy in the fractal with (tested 4 of them in the case). The fractal does a good job blocking out the reeving of the platters. The only thing I can here is this high pitch noise, like some on let a TV on snow. Which is really annoying...

Definitely going to raid it

And by the way, props on the WOW server videos, help me out a TON on figure out, how I should go about on making a home server build

How big of a SSD would I need? and leave some room for play?
