Which Lake CPU should I get?

Hey guys,

So I'm stuck and need your help to make a decision.

I am between the 6700K and 7700K, with the 7700K being around £30 more expensive, which isn't anything really, hence me having a hard time deciding here...

It's gonna to go into the new ASUS Z270I Gaming Strix motherboard:

Hang on, don't you have a 5820k?

I do yes, but since I barely even utilize it all, I'll give my X99 to my mom as she has an old 2600K at the moment.

And I also need something smaller, due to recent personal things requires smaller space.

Then wait for Ryzen for god's sake.

There's also absolutely nothing wrong with a 2600k and she will gain next to nothing you are just looking to waste money on shiny. Seriously man, don't do it. Find another hobby where you don't lose as much cash.

You could just have the 2600k. Don't think skylake/kabylake is gonna change it whole lot. I'd try that at least and see if you have any issues. If you really want to go for a new CPU for the sake of it then I'd always get the latest.

Should I get the latest one or the older one? If you don't care about the price that much, why not just go for the latest one?

Getting a sandy bridge itx board could get tedious and expensive.

I'm guessing NBD means for his own system. Which already has an ITX board with a 5820k in it, IIRC.

He's just got an itchy wallet and wants to spend cash.

First of all, I appreciate all of your thoughts, inputs here etc...

But what I don't like are posts like this:

Interesting how the spending habits are mirrored by the posting habits ;)

First of all, none of you have any business what so ever with what I do with my own money nor spend it on. Second, you have no idea about my private situation or my life, so saying stuff like "I wanna spend money just for the sake of it", is down right offensive to me.

If you knew my situation, then I'd understand. But you don't.
I can understand from a techie's perspective that it might seem like throwing money in the lake, but again, you don't know my situation.

So I'm done with this thread, I was expecting some actual, non-personal-finance attacks from you guys. Specially not from the webmaster himself. But that shouldn't have surprise me either, since you seem to have started a habit of your own to go at me.

You can lock or delete this thread, I don't care.

Lastly, Alien... To answer your question, I used to have the Asrock X99 ITX motherboard, but there were too many issues with it, so decided to go with an ASUS X99 Strix motherboard instead.

I think youve over reacted a little fella.

Understandably, though.

On topic, to the TS, have you seen any second-hand 6700K's muckin' about yet? I'm going to be upgrading over the next six months from a 4670K. I don't really need to upgrade as I'm GPU-bound more so than CPU-bound, but if RyZen and X370 platform is what I want then it'll be worth it. If it's not I may try and find a 6700K on the cheap and put more into a very nice Z270 motherboard. Many will be selling theirs to upgrade to a 7700K, a RyZen CPU, or maybe X99. That might save you £100.

There is no benefit to buying a 7700K unless you want to be part of the exclusive *cough* not exclusive *cough* 5Ghz e-peen race of forumites. The difference between a 6700K at 4.6Ghz and a 7700K at 5Ghz in gaming is within margin of error. If you want to perform other computing tasks that utilise the CPU more, a 5Ghz overclock might benefit you. But by then I'd say the far, far better option would be to give your ma a 6700K/7700K system and keep the 5820K for yourself. Or better yet, wait for RyZen! ^_^

If you are going for a new build with an intel quad core pay the extra £30 and get the 7700k.

So back to what I said.
If you need to go smaller, wouldn't it be easiest to go back to ITX again? Get a different motherboard this time? Also means less hassle when getting Windows to activate when it says it's not genuine
