Hi all,
Right so iv'e always used Windows for my OS and been quite happy with it, i have also loaded up the Linux Ubuntu live CD a few times just to check it out but i'm wondering what other OS's are there??

Even though i am still happy with Windows despite having some problems with it over the years, i just feel that a change would be good and help broaden my knowledge of computers even further.

I know there are many other Linux distribution out there but i don't know anything about them, and of course there is Mac OS but that obviously has one big problem it only runs on Mac's, although Hackintosh's do exist.

Is there anything else out there? and what are some of the other Linux distributions??...

Thanks for reading,
Antony :)

What about Chrome OS? Though I think you'll need a chromebook.

Building a Hackintosh is fun to do though. If you have a Gigabyte board or spare cash, I would recommend it!!

Thanks NeverBackDown that will be a good read :)

Feronix i had forgotten about Chrome OS, i have given it ago before in a virtual machine and didn't really like it all that much. And unfortunately i don't have a Gigabyte board or spare cash, if i did i would love to build a Hackintosh i have always wanted a Mac but i'm stuck with this instead:

CPU: Pentium E5200 2.50 GHZ (stock cooler)
MOBO: Foxconn G31MXP
RAM: 2 x 2GB Unbranded 400 MHZ
GRAPHICS: XFX 7770 double dissipation 1GB version
POWER: Corsair CX600 M
STORAGE: Boot: OCZ vertex 4 64GB (had it for ages) HDD'S: Maxator 150GB and Seagate 250GB

My poor CPU run's at 100% a lot of the time trying to keep up with everything, i could really do with getting Core 2 quad on the cheap somewhere :)

Well you could get 2 full systems for the price of one mac. So no point in buying it when you could essentially build 1 really kick ass gaming PC or 2 good ones that will beat any mac out there.

That is a very valid point NeverBackDown.

Ah Ebay yes i haven't looked on there for a while, thanks for reminding me mrapoc i will also look into Linux mint

:)

Linux Mint seems to be becoming more popular so i would check it out. If you go Andriod then that's Linux and technically you are running a Distro:p

Decided i'm going to give Ubuntu a go and install it properly on to one of my secondary hard drives, will it be fine if i just install it straight to that hard drive? will i be able to select which OS i want to boot into when i turn my computer on or do i have to install/fiddle around with boot loaders??

When I was dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu I did something wrong with the install and ended up using the Linux boot-loader to choose which OS I wanted at start-up (because I was too lazy to fix it)

This page may help though: http://askubuntu.com/questions/6244...untu-using-the-windows-bootloader/62442#62442

or if you too do something wrong, this one to fix it:

I created a bootable usb using unetbootin which works fine but when i'm in the Ubuntu installation interface my mouse doesn't let me click, this is the same for both 64bit and 32bit. I did a Google search about it and didn't come up with the cause or a fix, it seems like a lot of people are having the same problem. I really wanted to give Ubuntu a good go because that's what is used for Android development but it doesn't look like i can use it.

Despite not being able to use the mouse i did get it installed using the keyboard arrow keys and tab key, but that didn't seem to do anything i still can't click with the mouse.

I also decided i wont bother with messing with bootloaders seeing as i am installing linux on a separate drive i will just select that via the bios whenever i want to boot it.

Also what other Distro's can you use to develop Android with?

What mouse are you using?
In all linux distros that I've tried so far, my RAT7 gets stuck in one application and doesn't let me click anywhere outside of that application. Fixed it by adding some extra commands in the xorg.conf file.

you can develop on windows/linux, ubuntu is based on debian. so any debian based destro is function the same is terms of commands for tuts and android.

if you're just wanting to build apps any will do but you need linux to compile android from source.

Looking at developing some Apps and maybe going on to make a Custom ROM.

Have you tried this or this for the RAT? I did something like that to my RAT7.

Thanks i will give it ago hope it fixes it.

I don't seem to be having much luck getting my mouse to work whenever i enter the code in to the file it just messes the file up, and i can no longer read the file properly. My bog standard mouse does work i just needed to unplug my RAT3 but that mouse is used for the family computer so i can't just use that instead.

Never mind I was just doing a stupid typo (lower case in stead of a capital) my RAT 3 works a treat now :)

Edit: Right so i installed graphics drivers via the system settings on the left, it then prompted me to restart so i did and now when i boot it freezes at the splash screen with the dots.

All is good now, just did a fresh install I had installed the drivers the wrong way before and my mouse is working fine now to :)
