Bugger it, go on then.
Right first up. 2d gaming was not a gimmick and no one ever called it that. Not ever. In fact, calling it 2d gaming is a millennial saying so it is clear who wrote this list. Some spoiled little git more than likely.
VGA was not a gimmick either. It was a whole technology. So whoever wrote that again, clearly does not understand. It was a way of displaying a signal from a PC, and the monitor on the end of it. A proper invention. That said, it was replaced almost year on year until we got to SVGA where it stalled for a really long time.
Graphics cards are not a gimmick and never EVER were. That is a really, really dumb statement to make, as without them you would see F all on your screen. There was no onboard for many decades, so once again whoever wrote this is clearly very stupid.
Anti aliasing 2001? are they joking? the N64 used it in 1996 FFS. And again, gimmick? well, given every sodding game since the PC started using it uses it I would say not. And no one ever called it that either FFS. It was a ground breaking invention.
Online gaming is a gimmick. FFS really?. What this has to do with money is beyond me, as a monthly online gaming sub cost way less than what people spend on TV but whatever. But again, gimmick? no. A crack pipe and fantastic way to lose your time? totally. Again though, pretty much every game uses it now so however was it ever a gimmick? someone needs to look in the dictionary to see what a gimmick is.
2004. Physics in games is a gimmick. Ah, so now we are getting closer to the truth. Gimmick? absolutely not. Something to cut off and charge people too much money for when you can do it without a £120 card there are only two games for? So again, it was nothing more than just a sales strategy. See also most of these, Gsync, yada ya.
Ambient occlusion tessellation and the rest? again, were used to sell people s**t whilst giving them very little. Only, once the sales pitches were over that was when we started seeing it.
1440p is a gimmick. Erm no, it's a way of life.
4k is a gimmick. Nope, yet another sales pitch so that manus can keep increasing the prices of their GPUs.
Hello? Jen? is that you? did you write this?
VR is a gimmick. I would not go that far, but I would certainly call it a fad. Just like a lot of the crap we have been sold on over the years. That usually ends up gathering a lot of dust because it is a pain in the ass.
Ray tracing. Not a gimmick, but again a way to sell you something you don't really need and crank the prices of GPUs through the roof turning them into poser items just like the belmet who wrote this list enjoys.
Machine learning. Again, totally not needed for gaming and useful for cars and other technology. Just depends how they are selling it to you this week.
AI. A good way to replace people and lose more jobs.
