WASD keys not working in games

So -
A mate of mine has started playing games on his laptop (Acer 5755g) and for some reason the WASD keys don't work properly.

The movement is very slow and makes gaming impossible.

This has been tested on TF2 and Slender so far - can test more if need be.

Anyone any ideas?

It doesn't really lag.
It registers the movements but just does it all really slowly.

As in - in TF2 he presses W and moves forward at snails pace

  • Have you confirmed that the games mentioned, work fine using different movement keys?
  • Is there any delay for the effected keys, in other types of software (e.g. Notepad, Microsoft Office/OpenOffice, flash games)?
  • Is there any other programs running that could be interfering?
  • Have you done the usual troubleshooting of running CCleaner (regular & registry), virus scans, malware scans and defragmenting?

You might want to test with Hover, since it will run on everything from Windows 95 through to Windows 8, both 32 and 64 bit. There's a link to it at the bottom of this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hover!

sounds like what happens with all xbox controllers with "slow turn" but that happens on analogue sticks not buttons. Not sure tbh.

Have you been there when he does it, haven't played TF2 but does he know that you move really slowly in slender any way? Maybe he thinks that he's going slower than you're supposed to but he's not?

Seeing as WASD controls are simply on and off, i don't really see how it can be the fault of the controls. I've played some games in which i've enabled a 'slow mo' mode, which confused me for quite a while.

I couldn't think of a good way to put this earlier... I've had games go very slowly when my system is heavily taxed. I find that very high hard drive usage as well as a lack of available CPU resources can slow games down without it seeming like they're lagging. It's not common but it does happen (I haven't had GPU related problems for years so I can't remember if they do the same, but they probably do).

Have you tried hooking up another keyboard to ensure that it's not the keyboard?

@Tom If you see this, this would fit perfectly in the peripherals section. If we had one.
