Vsync or not..? does it damage the monitor?

Careful though, the new vsync from nvidia, introduced with the 7 series (adaptive vsync I think it's called), can vsync at higher rates, not only 60Hz.

Just checked a couple of screen makers, and they mention vertical sync up to 75-76Hz.

Make sure you don't exceed this, or you might have trouble (think most screens will turn blank as they protect their entries from hazardous signals).

Here we go again! All that adaptive vsync does is dynamically enabling and disabling vsync. All things in previous posts still apply. The REFRESH RATE of your screen is set in the driver settings and is NEVER EVER changed based on your framerate.
The only instance I know where a programm changes refresh rates is in XBMC where it can go down to 24hz for bluray playback.

Everyone that still really thinks your screen can take damage from turning of vsync, please take the time to read the article posted above by SuB, because it's getting a bit ridiculous.

OK, I stand corrected. I only read the first explanations which visibly were wrong. Checked a more in-depth study of Adaptive Vsync, and indeed, it keeps the refresh rate, it just cancels vsync when the target refresh rate ain't attained.

Thanks for pointing me on my error, I learned something today.
 
Never use vsync just like i never use AA :lol: vsync on in multiplayer games especially makes things horribly unsmooth.
 
i use vsync only for SP games and then only if input lag doesn't matter much. in multiplayer games i won't use it, the input lag is awful.

those people must shit their pants when they see people playing quake at 125 fps or promod at 250 :lol:

I run COD4 using /com_maxfps 250 but get connection issues with it, and then use vsync to limit it to 60fps and is sorts out the issues....

The difference being, I get the jump range of 250fps and a stable connection of 60fps. Those who play CoDJumper Mod will get the idea.

as a rule though I keep vsync off, but then I don't get any issues with the games I play weather the vsync is on or off.

oh god cod4 at 60 fps? no way. how do you even aim in promod with that input lag? how can your framerate impair your connection?

I have no idea, the server I play on limits their fps to 250 but my ping jumps to around 800-999ms with it set to that..... vsync might be tricking it into thinking is only 60?????

my guess is as good as yours, all I know is that it works fine....

If you enable vsync and the refresh rate is 60 hz, your fps actually are at 60. That's what vsync actually does. It syncs the fps to your monitors refresh rate.
 
yup, that's what I thought.....

but if I leave my /com_maxfps at the normal capped 91, there's a lot of jumps and sniper spot which are impossible to get to.......but capping it to 250 and vsync ON (60) my jumps are that tiny bit bigger....Not sure why exactly, but this is how it is.....strange but true :lol:

because 91fps is a shitty spot and 63 fps is slightly better.

neither of them are even a proper spot, they aren't the quotient of 1000 and an integer.

It's simple.

If you're getting over 60fps in a single player game, and need your image to stop tearing, just bump your settings and get some extra eye candy for free.

If you're playing multiplayer, you'd be foolish to enable v-sync due to input lag, which is bloody horrid.

V-Sync has no place.
