Vista + Creative x-fi = scp bug... but worse

ok since installed i've had the snap crackle pop bug.. on startup, using windows, doing anything...

it seems tied to the hard drive activity (sometimes it isn't) and I've put up with it until recently. now it does the snap crackle pop rubbish, then it decides to kick the front speakers off and use only the rear left and right speakers...

then might swap to only the front 2 speakers,

and once even swapped to using the center speaker only and the sub woofer

it happens only when I'm listening to music/videos playing games.. and I'll be damned if I'm going to have SILENT windows forever this is starting to seriously annoy me

spec as sig:

Asus sli premium (latest bios)

4800x2 (no over clock and on water)

2gb ram (4x512mb)

7800gt (on water)

x-fi xtreme music

using the silimage for raid 0

and the nforce for 2 other drives

one last thing if i were to setup raid to work on the nforce chip and just swap the drives onto that instead of the silimage ports would the raid 0 setup still work or is it a format jobby?

i'm seriously sick of it now i've heard stuff like putting cardboard wrapped in foil between the graphics card and the sound card helps (sounds dangerous)

using different sata ports and stuff but only by word of mouth.. nothing solid and i'm sure as hell not putting conductive foil anywhere near my xfi and 7800gt on a hunch...

any suggestions chaps?

Have you swapped the position of the X-Fi? Could be an IRQ thing. Just a suggestion although you may have tried it.

Apart from that I am unsure. I assume you've uninstalled, driver cleaned and re-instaled the latest drivers. I would possibly go for a faulty card as my X-Fi works a treat in Vista after some fiddling with the drivers to get mic support

i haven't driver cleanered it yet, i shall have to try that tomorrow

and i did try a different pci slot but i shall try again 2moro with some driver re-installs

any idea on the raid 0 thing?

iirc the sil image is 150 where as the nforce is 300 so i'd rather use that if possible lol

damn, nevermind then i aint faffing about reinstalling again lol done too much to be muckin about

may i ask what 'in-windows' settings your using for the x-fi? all the options n stuff it gives?

like exclusive mode and stuff

edit: thank goodness for msn lol

I think Creative released a statement a little while back saying what they thought was causing the SCP issues. IIRC the X-Fi hogs the PCI bus so anything else placing a demand on the PCI bus (especially RAID) causes latency of the sound data. Hence the snap, crackle and pop. Apparently Creative says the blame lies with the motherboard manufacturer and a BIOS update is needed to solve the problem. I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem and not a software one.

Is your OS installed on the silimage RAID array? If not, maybe take that out the picture and see if the SCP goes away. I think you can move a RAID array to another controller but you might be safer just to reformat.

Let me know how you get on because I have a an XtremeMusic and a DFI nF4 mobo (which is a combination susceptible to SCP) and am think of adding RAID 0 soon.

Yeah iirc it's only with nF4, but it seems sporadic. I have a friend who ran X-Fi + Raptors in RAID w/DFI Lanparty Ultra-D and he was fine. I ran X-Fi with nF4 too.

yup OS is on raid 0 :( i really don't want to lose that...

i changed some settings and thus far it's ok... but i'll update asap

thanks to kemp btw he's been a massive help tonight and i swear he works for dell...

NP's and you know you want a 2407 ;)

Dell suck apart from lappies and massive screens ;)

crackling has been greatly reduced with the settings given.. but it did it a couple of time so it's not totally gone..

it seems that i'm screwed on the motherboard front then since i've got OEM vista..

:( my 4800 x2 was bought merely months ago and i aint going intel or am2 as i can't afford to

not with managing to budget in a 2407 now...

yes thats right! i'm getting one.. damn you kemp... you sold it to me

i can't get over just how many inputs it's got lol i'll be happy as larry :D

*sigh*

anyone want to buy a pair of 19" tft's?
