Silly me!

Last week my 980 GTX popped a mosfet watching netflix, replaced with a Zotac GTX 1070 AMP edition. Won the silecone lottery with it as it's happily clocking in at 2088Mhz on the core and 9.4Ghz on the memory (Micron BIOS fix applied)

Absolutely thrilled with the difference going to a 1070 (I can play Hell Let Loose!)

I decided to use my Die Mate 2 today to delid my extremely hot 4790k (thermals at stock voltages on 280mm AIO).

At the same time, I also serviced the Artic Freezer II with a new gasket and cold plate.

I kind of regret doing it somewhat now (It's an excuse to get a 5800X).

Popped the chip in the tool, delidded it and cleaned it all up with alcohol using a plastic card to take off the old silicone. All SMD's clean and good looking. I'm not using liquid metal, so didn't coat the SMD's with varnish or tape. Re-applied the IHS with the chip mounted in the socket, ensuring it clamps in the correct place (not going to bother to reseal).

Booted her up and well.. Code 55 Memory not installed. Managed to get her to boot with one stick in, applying the old pressure trick on the loosely mounted water block. However, was the only time I got it to boot. I've done the memory hop trick, applying different levels of pressure. I've even remounted the CPU a fair few times and cleaned it entirely again with alchohol.

That is, until I noticed a bent pin on the motherboard. Game over, I think... until I went full key-hole surgery on the socket with some tweezers. I think I did a good job putting it back!

Having a bit of a breather...

Here's some photo's of the processs:

Failing after this, it 5800X and a new mobo

She's fixed :)

Seems that bent pin might have been the culprit. Eitherway, dropped an average 25c across all cores. Be interesting to see what I can get out of her now before dropping some money on a new build.

Good news you fixed it :)

Just delided my 7950X , still hits 95c with PBO2

Totally not worth it with my 7950X, but did it for the fun and the "Why Not"

Damn, that's hot!

I've been pushing 1.4v into this 4790k trying to get 5Ghz stable. I don't think she's going to be stable with 2800Mhz on the RAM and for sure, not efficiant. I've been at 4.9, but bench scores plummit.

Being able to go from 1.16v maximum to now 1.4v without thermals being the limiting factor is a new one for me in years. This 4790k needed a delid around 2 years after ownership. Just never been bothered until deciding to upgrade soon.

Currently stable at 4.8 with 1.27v which I think is pretty good.

Not that it matters much, I'll be putting a new mainboard/cpu together tonight and will look at running a couple of suicide runs when she's up and running.

Not sure what to go for yet, 5800X, 5800X3D, or spend a bit more and go DDR5.

Don't exactly want to be braking the bank, but hell even a 12400f royally s on this 4790k across all areas.

After watching Gamers Nexus video regarding their rant on motherboards, which I recommend you go watch, I'd stay away from DDR5 for now. Unless you like fiddling around with issues etc, I'd stay away from it for now.

5800X3D is essentially one of the best CPUs for gaming, still this day and AM4 platform is very solid today as well. A bit cheaper too.

I don't mind playing per se, but if it's as bad as it is then yeah, I can't be bothered with that. I've not experienced DDR4 yet as I've been on this 4790k since 2014!

Funnily enough, I watched the video a few days ago and completely agree with him on the 7-digit LED POST Code. For sure came in handy a lot today.

Will slap some combos together for 5800X/3D. Any mobo brands/models to avoid these days?

Well I personally stay away from Gigabyte, simply due to their are notoriously bad for standing behind their products. For me, warranty support and support in general from a company is half the reason for me buying said product.

I've always also gone ASUS/ROG boards, although they've really dropped in quality lately unfortunately.

Building PCs isn't as fun as it used to be unfortunately, if you ask me. Quality is going down etc.

That's a shame :( Has been a good while since I looked into it all, been out the game quite a while.

I'll stick with ASUS then :)

Currently got the ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F in the cart, along with a 5800X3D
Seems to be quite a few revisions, such as WiFi, Gaming etc.
I just want stable power delivery/VRMs, a good set of options for playing etc, non of this RGB crap :D

RGB isn't crap ask dice :P

Still you wont be overclocking that x3d is why i went with 5800x thou saying that the x3d in games that like cache makes a huge difference.

I think i'll jump to AM5 with a x3d 8 core when i see a next GPU I like so it'll be a while.

I completely forgot about the frequency being locked on the 3D. Hmmm, I don't think I'll be upgrading for a good while after this anyway, so perhaps the 3D might be the best bet if it still beats a 5800X overclocked.

in games that like cache the x3d beats most chips, it's by far not a bad chip even without the overclock, just in games that do not get huge use of cache it's maybe 10% behind so it's worth having, for me at the time i got my 5800x i got it for £225 where as the x3d had only just come out and was over £300 still.

To be honest, I don't really game a lot these day's. The games I do play, run well. I see the 5900X is the same price, so I may just do that as I'd rather have the additional cores.

Ended up getting the 5800X3D and a Asus Strix B550A bundle for around £460 from Scan. Quite happy with that I think :) Although, I would have preferred the B550-E, as the 5800X3D can't be overclocked conventionally, I'm happy with 2 less VRMs/SLI in favor of more USB-A and Optical out.

Already have some spare Dominator Plat's 2666 DDR4, though, I don't think 2666 is going to cut it at all.
