Using the Host file

Im sure alot of you guys know about the ability to block IPs using window's host file.

Well, I have Assassins Creed and I get a crash at the start up unless I have the Ethernet cable unplugged.. which is a pita.

SO I then decided I will find out what the hell the game is doing, basically it connects to 216.98.48.53:3074 every now and then. But if it cannot get there(no network) then the game runs.

Otherwise I get a nice crash and an event log saying "The redirector failed to determine the connection type."

Right, so I know you can block IPs.. but how would I do it if it doesn't have a website address?

Cheers.

It depends on your firewall settings.

See if installing AC has added an exception for this service in your firewall and turn it off.

This could also be done in your anti virus firewall or at the router.

I have a Netgear DG834PN and would create a service on the router settings e.g. 'AC crash' using TCP/UDP and port 3074. Then in the router firewall settings block inbound and outbound (or try just outbound first) for 'AC crash' for IP 216.98.48.53.

AFAIK the hosts file can only be used in the way you want if Assasins creed was connecting to a fqdn such as checkassassin.creed.com.

This is because the hosts file is used for manual resolution of names to IP addresses and doesn't come into play if an IP address is used directly (like in your case).

If it was connecting to a domain name, then you could add this line to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 checkassassin.creed.com

So it would just keep trying to connect to your own PC rather than going out to the net.

:)

Ta, I'm a frequent user of port adjustments on my router now my son has taken over my gamertag and has internet access in his room. :o

What router are you using, I have to create a 'service' before I can block it or allow access.

This ubi thread may help (I found it by googling the IP address)?

Using a 3Com 3CRWDR100A-72, good bit of kit.. until now. ;)

And yeah, read that thread. That is where I found the IP.

I noticed network activity just as the game crashes.. but still cannot block it.

Disabling the LAN seems to be the only option at the moment.

One way you can get round it, and its a bit "dirty" is assign your own NIC the ip address... the packets wont leave your pc.

Do you have the manual?

The firewall section should cover how to block a port/IP address combo (provided the router's firewall is turned on).

However, the problem is the .ini file is looking to see if you have an internet connection and it'll probably still crash if you block the connection as windows is reporting a live connection unless you unplug it. The tweak to the .ini file to either remove the instruction to connect or give it a correct IP address.

Final thought, is port 3074 open on your router/pc for something else and do you just need to add this IP /port combo as a permitted service. It may be an anti cheat/validation/user stats background activity.

convuluted... but could you redirect it to another pc on the network or something... I'm not sure what you could do there neither.
