TTL's Preferred cooler choice no longer NHD14

It's been the H100 for quite a while now hasn't it. So is this a case of RIP Noctua?

I can't see it coming back tbh which is fair enough. I'll get myself a H100 after I get to China next year.

Has anyone else ditched the NHD14 for the H100 recently? Worth it?

side-by-side, they perform equally.

but, the H100 takes the lead when wanting tall RAM and NOT wanting a bulky cooler in a rig.

that's it

D14 is if you want great performance at a very good price.

H100/H100i is if you're willing to pay more for aesthetics.

H100 is also louder and so even more money needs to be spent on some decent fans really.

I will be getting rid of my D14 soon, and will be replacing it for an H100i. That's mainly due to aesthetics though.

From Tom's perspective it's probably also a lot easier to mount the h100/i block each time the platform changes for reviews/testing, rather than a tower cooler.

The size of this behemoth is what made me go H100 (well that and I'm a Corsair fanboy). I just didn't like the idea of a 40 pound chunk of metal hanging from my beloved Sabertooth. Didn't care for giving up a pair of RAM slots either. Would be nice to have the silent fans though and a D14 will last a lot longer than a H100 cause there's no pump to wear out.

Yeah I just went H100 when I moved everything else over to Corsair. The H100i can beat the D14 easily now but its much louder.

You need to remember the bench rig isnt my main rig.

There is good and bad points for both tbh, the Noctua would win the battle for performing better at the same noise level but its obviously foooking OOOOGE and I knew the Dominator Platinums were coming too so I like to look at them more :D

There are many reasons to have a h100 or d14. The nice thing about the h100 is that you can move the case about. I wouldn't want to put a pc with a heavy heat-sink in my car. But if I had a machine to be left on 24/7 I wouldn't really want to use the h100 (or any water-cooling for that matter) I would much rather use an air cooler. Maybe that's my opinion or more of an abstraction.

i recently went from D14-H100i

But that was purely cause i bought the Dominator RAM. and love to look at it, plus the changing lights on the H100i with the temperature thing look awesome

Having a H100 means you decide where the heat is going out, rather than just filling the case with hot air then having to exhaust it.

CPU temps are on par but I noticed the board got far better temps in regards to VRM and NB temps.

Plus i hate having a block of Alu hanging off the board.

Plus the Corsair link with the h100i makes it a little better IMO. You could also just use noctua fans on your h100i, or corsair SP120QEs, and that will make it alot quieter. Well worth the cost. Not sure if i would upgrade from the D14 if i already had it thought.

I don't really rate the link system much.
When/if I get my H100i, I don't even think I'll have it installed.

I'm against the whole idea of constantly needing to monitor temps and adjust fan speeds accordingly. I think PCs should be set up to be quiet all the time, and adjust overclocks down so things stay cool and quiet all the time.

No point in needing to monitor temps, considering you should have run stress tests and the temps you saw there should be the maximum temperatures you'll ever see.

If you have the Corsair software link to control the fans no need SP120QEs go directly to the sp120HPe!

I understand what you're saying here, and I agree that computers should be set to run quietly all the time. But ti would just be easier to control those kind of things (especially for someone who doesn't know much about these kind of things) to just be able to do it in the OS.

Well where's the fun in that? Might as well just buy a pre-built system and let everything run at default settings.

Overclocking is fun and the constant tinkering and tweaking is all part of it. Maybe Im in the minority on this but I love the constant adjustments and all that.

I find myself doing that sometimes, just sitting down and seeing what these changes can do and what will happen if i make those changes. Thats why i have an old Intel P4 system that kind of serves as my test subject. Kind of sounds like im a mad scientist for computers....

Woah, I'm not for a minute saying don't tinker with your system...

Definitely not saying don't overclock...

I just don't buy into having to change fan speeds up and down dependent on the task you're running. I have my CPU at 4.5ghz, and my 670 overclocked to the max. All my case fans, and fans on my D14 are running at 5v, and my 670 has its fans locked down to 30% (lowest it will go). Max temps I see are 75ish on CPU and under 60 on the GPU. All while the rig is silent, all the time too.

Temperatures like that are absolutely fine - good in fact! And that's with the lowest fan speeds I can possibly set.

I can't see that at all being similar to building a pre-built system... Completely the opposite in fact. I have it set up exactly how I want it. I love taking my system apart, whether to rewire cabling, or install new parts, but when it comes to changing fan speeds and shit like that every time I want to play a game, I just don't see any fun in that, especially when it seriously doesn't need to be done.

I appreciate that others may like to use a fan controller and monitor temps. But I just don't see the need for it. You overclock, then stress test. In doing that, you find your maximum overclock etc, but also you find the maximum temperatures all of your components are going to get to. You don't need to keep your eye over temps because you know if the CPU only reaches 75 degrees after 2 hours of Intel Burn Test, it's never going to get higher, and so you adjust your fans accordingly.

That's just how I see things.

I gotcha and for the most part agree. I have my fans set to slow speed so theyll be nice and quiet and only turn them up when Im stress testing. I thought you were on about not wanting to have to monitor and tweak things. No self respecting OC nerd would ever not want to have lots of buttons to push and cool looking monitoring software on their screens.
