The Hammond Thread

Clarkson once again proves that he's right about "accidents", topgeat and beaurcracy with his articles at

The Sun

and

The Times

People calling for top gear to be banned should just stop watching, turn over to ITV and carry on watching the multitude of documentaries and fictional police dramas.

Whos to bet that if an actor was killed during filming of Eastenders that no one would even batt an eye lid and it would be a "tradgic accident" yet you put someone into car, sorry someone Volunteers to put themselves into a dangerous situation, all merry hell breaks loose. We have indeed gone mad with the blame culture and our refusal to accept an accident can be just that, has gone out the window.

If Top Gear does get banned then everything similar has to be banned. You cant show motor sports on tv, period. SouthPark covered this excellently with the Cartoon Wars episodes. Once you ban one thing you have to ban them all or ban nothing, no inbetween. Im not comparing Top Gear to Mohammed but the situation is similar in some respects.

To me Top Gear represents one of the last bastions of normality on TV in some respects, Clarksons comments that "all motocyclists should be shot on in the face" is just pure funny. I mean come on, in other forums Ive seen people get upset about it, but, dont we all have a friend who says stuid things that we dont agree with and just carry on with it?

Does Top Gear REALLY glamourise speed? Yes, on a air field, not on public roads, in controlled conditions. How many pople who complain that it glamourises speed own a car that can do 150+ mph or own jags, audis, porches etc etc, the exact middle britain that complain about the speed fascination. Perhaps a tad bit of jealousy that goes there.

Clarkson makes a good point that it was the BBC's own news website that started the backlash and complaints against Top Gear as well.

At the end of the day TV is like the internet. Dont like what you are looking at, watching or listening to.. then DONT watch it, listen to it or look at it, at the end of the day everything is a numbers game. If people arent tuning in then shows get cancelled.

I bet you a fiver that WHEN Top Gear does come back, the BBC2 ratings will trounce everything on that night... o wait... it already does.

(mods feel free to move this to the rant section)

Top Gear is awesome. Hope the Hamster gets better :)

On the upside Yorkshire Air Ambulance has raised £155k+ from donations over the internet :)

amen to that brother :D

I'm sorry but some people moan and complain, 'it's not really a motoring show as all they do is mess about in cars that no one can afford etc...' well yes, thats the idea, it's called TOP Gear not Middle of the road small family hatchback gear!!!!!

I'm an absolute car freak and yes, there's no possible way I could ever afford an Ferrari, Lamborgini, Zonda etc... all I can do is stare at images of them over the internet.

Top Gear however makes these still images move, you get to hear them, you get to see them smoking their tyres, you get to see them doing what their supposed to do. They push these cars to limits that other so called 'motoring journalists' are to afaraid to do.

I mean Clarkson and Co. also seem to be as enthusiatic as myself about cars and that enthusiasm comes across in their tests on these cars, you can see the sheer excitement on their faces, the little upturned grin as they plant all 600 raging horses of some great super car onto the tarmac, they are genuinley seriously interested in these cars. Like I said, there's no way on Earth I'd ever be able to afford one of thease cars (although I play the lottery in hope) but who better to bring these cars alive to you than the Top Gear team? I don't think there's another trio on the face of this planet that could do that job so well as those 3. They're not rock stars, they're not Hollywood actors they are 3 blokes who (to quote Hammond) have 'probably reached the pinacle of coc*ing about in cars'.

Lets not forget, they do review some middle of the road cars and although Clarkson has no obvious interest, he do give some good poiters, they see the light hearted side of what could be an obviously very boring topic.

If the BBC or the nanny state do start a motion to ban Top Gear, I for one will be behind the TG team supporting them all the way.

WTF, people want it banned!!! We get Top Gear here in Aus, and the program is freakin' awesome.

ROFLMAO, and like peeps would watch it if it were all about family cars...boring  I can imagine it now 'let's put the Toyota Tarago up against the Honda Odyssey family wagon for 10 laps around the track' :D

Not particularly a fan of the show, can`t stand the presenters tbh, but if it happens to be on - there can be some interest. But in the main I feel I want to turn off as soon as they start waffling.

Pretty bad accident mind u, nice insurance payout I spect, but it`s like rock-climbing - even when u semi know what u`r doing, accidents happen. And when they do, they`re pretty bad.

Got no grudge on the show tho, don`t see why people want to get it banned. It seems a petty thing to demand imo.

I didn`t see too many nature shows being called for bannage when that Australian was killed - really awful that was, even tho the guy was extreme `n all that.

Bah u always get peoples wanting to crusade to ban stuff. There`s too much bannage in the world as it is if u ask me. Next year it`s rumored I won`t be able to smoke outside of the house - and yet I can feel free to stick my mouth over some1`s exhaust on the motorway - madness.

Totally agreed lads - Top Gear rocks.

If it does get banned we've all still got Channel 5's "5th Gear" ROFL!!!:rollingla

Top Gear is THE best auto show on TV. Accidents happen and I'm glad hammond is okay but you shouldn't ban a show because of an accident.

The revamp sure has turned that show around.

And no, you can't ban it because of the accident. There'd never be any motor racing on TV if they started doing that.

But I think it was an amazing recovery. He was walking about 30 hours later. Won't be long before we see the Hamster at the wheel again:p

In Bupa Hospital, Clifton.

I went past it, this morning funny enough.

Gotta love the Bupa Hospitals ;)

As has been said over at Hexus (and massively at PistonHeads) I think most people are wishing for the speedy recovery of Richard Hammond & the return of Top Gear :)
