The worry though is that everything becomes processed, the meat wouldn't just be available as meat itself only loaded with lots of fat, water and salt to make it go further. This sort of thing would be dangerous in a market that dealt only with profits, there would need to be very strict regulations on it.
That said, lab grown food can be made as healthy or as unhealthy as the company desires. Most of the population in an area gets insufficient iron in their diet? Make the food supply there contain more iron. Too much fat consumption? Less fat in the food. Very 1984 I know just throwing out possibilities.
This idea was never going to be perfect.

they basically grow lots of thin layers of muscle tissue then once they have enough they sandwich it together, then you're left with "meat" that is pale and white in colour.
To make it look like meat they then dye it red and add bread to give it a better "texture" of meat.

would be prefect for third world countries if they could load it with good fats and things, meaning even if they cant get alot its enough.
And space travel this is what will become staple diet, until someone can create a replicator (the energy in to substance kind, not the bent on destroying all man kind version)

pretty much, if you watch top gear they summed it up pretty well. they get it out of the ground ship it to these huge expensive refineries, process it which requires alot of energy. Then ship the product to the countries and in the uk they pay i think over 50% tax, before VAT is even put on it.

That is exactly what I thought off when i read your post
I think they worked it out as the do all that for about 40p.

yeah and yet we have to pay well over £1.20 for one litre and its more in some places
