Stripe size for Raid 0?

Hey guys

I need to know the best strip size for the new 2x 150gb raptor raid 0 im setting up

It will be mainly for gaming, the usual use such as music, internetting, photos and films gaming being the primary use.

I may be doing *SOME* video work, the odd photoshopping but the main thing will be gaming and a bit of benching

So strip size =?

According to Asus' manual, typical disk use is 64KB, whereas performance is 128KB, I assume that this will probably come under performance (esp gaming and movies). The larger the strip the higher the performance as there will be less seek to the next strip. On the other hand I guess that this will increase the problem if one of those segments goes bad.

It recommends servers use 32KB, but I don't think this is applicable.

Some people are recommending 64kb as 128 will only benefit large files - which the majority of gaming and day to day use will not actually be

so 128 would only benefit me when im messing around with isos and the like?

Some reading of the interweb it looks that way. I'd go with 64KB, from what it said in the manual 128KB seemed to be performance, but on the basis noone else agrees, I'd go 64KB. With raptors, the performance ought to be fantastic even at 64KB...:D

So 64kb vs 128kb

Smaller files vs bigger files

The majority of files needed to be loaded fast would be smaller files in my setup (I only play with isos etc. for installing) and game files arent THAT big at a time

So thats +1 for 64kb

lets see if deathwish has something to add :P i see you lurking there

a 64kb stripe is fine for two drives

a larger stripe would be usefull if you are moving large files arround all the time like on a file server

larger stripes are less efficient at holding small files

64kb gives the best of both worlds
