Storage for NAS

Hello all

Time to get some proper hard drives for my synology nas box. Only have 2x320gb seagates atm. Need 1tb+ for films etc.

Ok so - Do I get set it to Raid0 so I can get 2tb from two 1tb drives

Raid 1 and get 2x 2tb

Both will be backed up to an external usb drive (I also have to buy)

Keeping mainly costs in mind and warranty/reliability. I know raid0 is a big nono for redundancy and I have no interest in the minimal speed gain as the network is probably gonna be the bottleneck! But 2x 2tb drives is gonna be pricey

Remember gigabit will give you a max of about 120MB/s

Youll need good mechanicals to max that in raid 1, tbh Id say the actual box will be the limiting factor. If its just films does it matter if you loose them?

Its gonna be storing/backing up photos and documents too but seems a useful way to stream videos

Thinking about it I could probably save cash and keep the videos on a 1.5tb drive I already have on the PC and run some kind of DNLA streaming not backed up and keep the docs/photos on the existing 320gb drives and just get a hard drive to back these up on the NAS

You need to decide if you need back up fella.

Mine are personally in raid 6, means Ive got 2 drives in parity but means Ive got extra security. Ive also got a redundant drive should one die and the raid card will just sort it all out and tell me what one needs to be replaced

Personally mate id just throw 2 large drives in the synology and use the hybrid raid, you can then just chuck everything on the NAS and stream from there.

I have the DS412+ at home with 4x1TB drives in (dual gig lan) and I can stream no bother straight from myne and everything sits on that.

Ill be changing the drives out soon to 3TB ones if I can get a good deal on them.

If you can afford to then get bigger drives and throw them, if not then keep important stuff on the NAS with say 2x 1TB drives(or what ever you can afford) and keep stuff like movies on a pc to stream from there

get western digital red drives cause they have a pretty good waranty and will run in any raid box according to western digital although they are little more expensive but they will run for ages

Or the Western Digital Enterprise drives. REDs are really nice and my buddy just put 4x2TB REDs in his 1U Poweredge server.

I'd avoid the Reds if possible. Huge problems with reliability. Purchased 5 for a Qnap NAS (1 spare) and 3 were DOA. Out of the 3 that came back after replacement, one was DOA. I have no faith in these drives. Lots of user reviews are saying the same thing. WD has a quality control issue with them.

It has to be a fluke. I've purchased 10+ WD drives over the last year, 4 Red, 2 Black, 2 Blue, and every single one is still running.

The fluke is their QA team is sleeping on the job. I usually stick with their RE3/4 lines of drives, all my other NAS are running those. The new NAS though only listed the Red 3TB as being certified to work. The 3TB RE4 wasn't on their list.

I've purchased quite a bit more than 10 drives this past year. Only other bad drives I had to deal with were a 2 TB WD RE4 and a 3.5" Dell 15k SAS drive.

Check the reviews listed here, not too promising.

Well....my friend runs a 1U Dell poweredge with 4x3TB REDs and he hasn't had any problems. I can't really say anything more. I personally have all WD drives. My rig has 2x1TB Blacks and a 1TB Green for movies. My server has a 500GB Green and a 640GB Blue (Why the sizes? I got them both for free) ^_^
