Should I wait for the new Ivy Bridge Mobile Laptop CPUs?

Blarg DX I know I am being so hard headed but, Q.Q I saw those scores and I was like, but they would be so much better with the SLI or the one I was going for which was 2x6990m in Xfire but, lord I know that is gonna run hot but all I keep saying to myself is "Just by a cooling pad".....If my brain does not get into gear and just buy the Single Gpu I may just let make the specs and I will just buy it for myself and not look XD lol

I really wanna ask tho, would the heat be that bad? I mean, I would be able to take it in more if I had like some comparisons of like, The m17x with one GTX580m and the m18x with 2xGTX580m's, Then I would just stop second guessing everything and just concent to the fact that your idea is the best one .____. Sorry, I can be stubborn sometimes.

Another note, would it be better to get the GTX580m, or the 6990m?

Probably a 6990m will be faster than a 580m

Will be hotter though, up to you what heat you can bear, either way I'd only reccommend one

But the whole point was that with SLi or Xfire, there really wasn't much of a difference with the minium fps, which is the one you are looking at the most with a laptop. Cooling pads can only do so much. Its difficult for me to pull a temperature out of the bag and say this is the difference, but think how hot each GPU will get, I'd say about 60-70 easily, then put two of them in, then consider its a laptop so the heat is just going everywhere
sad.gif
Then with all that heat, the CPU is also gonna start getting hot
smile.gif
You also want to be careful, because I know some laptops start throttling down the CPU, and in some cases the GPU, when they get above a certain threshold temperature, so that's another consideration to bear in mind

I think Ya93sin is right, there is something kicking me in the back of my head about heat throttling. Can someone please confirm this?

I think nearly all the CPUs do it now, I believe Intel SpeedStep throttles the CPU for Intel CPUs, not sure on the AMD equivalents. I know Acer laptops used to always get complaints because they don't produce very well ventilated laptops, or at least the dust always builds up quickly, so you get high temperatures, so they are often throttled. My netbook gets throttled

And its only at 1.2GHz LOL

Well I guess I am gonna get the m17x then xD Thanks man, I really owe you for actually helping me and being one of the first non-d**k weeds to reply to this, You and SIN where awesome for the help

.

About the 6990m vs the 580m, I have heard that the 6990 is slower and then I have heard it is faster then the 580m but, if it is faster I could deal with the heat because it is about $300 cheaper then the GTX580m.

WoW o.o I did not know that CPU throttled like that in lappy's, how bad would that impact my performance in like say Crysis 2?

I'm not sure from personal expreience, but i've heard that Sager is a good brand, and from the looks of it, you can go to that website and customize one with a 580m and it'll still be under 2500.

just a thought

The reason I do not go with Sager is because...They are simply not aesthetically pleasing. They just are too professional looking, I would only buy ether an MSI, Asus, or Alienware as they look the best IMO

Again i'm just gonna tell you what i found out through experience (TRUE story) I bought my M17X based on the fact that when it came out it was simply the coolest looking laptop my eyes have seen, with all colours everywhere and the styling that was very similar to the Audi R8 (the front two speaker grills) and guess what - 1) I paid for it then, aka it cost me a shit ton 2) i'm paying for it now, not finically but with the problems / and the weight, as a University student i'm telling you, you are gonna get back ache's (ok getting a little more personal just so you can compare, i am a 6'3" (191cm) male with an average build, the laptop is about 11-12 pounds and the power brick which you NEED is about 2-3 pounds, and if i have to carry to school i'll dread it)

just my 2cents

but have fun with it (i know i did for a month or two

Well I guess it depends on the temperature that your CPU ends up running at
smile.gif
It should be OK with a single GPU, its a big laptop anyway, so if they designed it properly then it should also have good ventilation

Hmmmmmm, in the very end of it I will buy which is the better performer. Do you know which is better?

As far as I can tell performance is really similar, as are temperature, the 6990m has more overclocking potential, so perhaps its possible you could undervolt it for same perf but lower votls (and so lower temps). Alsothe 6990m is a lot cheaper. 580m has better game and driver support usually, so its a toss up. Personally I'd go for the 6990m if its that much cheaper
