Random Restarts

Hi everyone,

I've just built a new PC, but i'm having problems with it. The first one i had was that Windows wouldn't install onto the new hdd. Once i got it to install and all set up i started to get other problems. My system just seems to restart for no reason. It's not over heating as it's 30C ide. It seems to do it a lot when i have music on, but still restarts when my PC isn't doing anything. Do you guys have any ideas what it could be?

Here is the spec:-

A couple of the things you might want to check/do are:

* Check that your voltages are ok and you havn't obtained a dodgy PSU.

* Check your ram timings and maybe loosen them a bit for testing purposes.

* In System Properties under Advanced, Startup/Recovery, uncheck the 'Auto restart' box. This will show the error instead of auto restarting.

* Try removing your non-essential components one-by-one to see if any of them are faulty (sound card, dvdrw, stick of memory...)

Let us know how you get on.

ya i put the new bios on once i installed windows. How do i turn off the restart thing? Here are the volts i'm getting:-

Volts seem fine.

To turn off the auto restart thing do this:

Right click My Computer => Properties => Advanced => "Startup & Recovery" Settings => Uncheck "Automatically restart".

Go to start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager>view>resources by connection>Interrupt Request

Then take a look-see if anything is sharing IRQ

I'd advise to run memtest86+ on tests 5 and 8 to see if you get any memory errors too :)

nothing is using IRQ

i'll run memtest in a bit and see. I'm thinking about just selling my memory and getting some more. Which works best on a DFI board?

Well PQI are doing some good stuff but in the UK there's some good deals on GSkill HZ (or whatever) 2 x 1gb sticks or OCZ Gold VX 2 x 1gb Sticks.

I have Crucial Ballistix and its awesome RAM :)

If you mean the "G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 (2x1GB) CAS3 Dual Channel Kit (F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ) (MY-008-GS) "

then yes their good chips and that price is right :)

Can you run your system without the sound card please and let me know if it restarts again.

If you dont want to do that goto control panel > System > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > Right click on your sound card and choose disable

Restart your pc and use it for a while. Creative sound cards can cause havok sometimes. If your system works fine like this then we need to go through your installation.

Btw you can enable the sound card same above way. Just choose enable instead of disable when you want to enable it.

i ran memtest and got no errors. I think that the dfi board just doesn't like my memory, so i'll have to watch out what i buy next
