some sort of like or Rep system could be handy, would give an opportunity to let user judge if a user is trustworthy or not.
then again there is the likelihood such a system could be abused. i think it's still worth a try, it it isn't too much to ask.
I think the post count is a sort of rep system. See someone with a thousand posts you can think well they are regular and actually care about this stuff.
Doesn't necessarily mean they know what they are talking about though

Best thing to do is add a "thanks" button that doesn't give any rep or add any kind of rep points to someone.
Having a "thanks" button that does nothing but simply act as a way of saying thanks for a post that helped you or you found interesting is the best of both worlds really. You still get credit for helping someone and at the same time it can't be abused and doesn't matter how may thanks and or post you have or don't have.
There are some people that have a post count in the thousands but most of their posts are made up of one line sentences like "I agree with the above" and saying "hello" in introduction threads. So going off post count alone doesn't really mean anything, at the end of the day though this is a forum, and the majority of people stick around. So something like a rep count is only useful for new comers. Anyone that doesn't stick around isn't going to be bothered by it and the ones that do don't really need it.
Just my opinion on the matter anyway.
I really agree with SieB on this one.............it really makes sense !
