Please SuB can we have a like button?

The only problem is that in some cases, as I've seen, the like or dislike buttons are abused. Much like down-repping.

It'll need some moderation but I think it's a nice idea.
*Ahem* OC.net rep system *Ahem*

I'd quite like it though...

Most trolls usually die off at some point, so it is useful to see the post count of people. (We have this system) Since we can conclude that a person with a high post count is more trustworthy, then the like button becomes obsolete, because we already have a way to measure one's credibility.

The like button is going to be too easy to troll and that is something we do not want on this forum. I am against the like button
the current methods suit me, so I have no need for a like button.

I might be wrong here, however this is my opinion and I hope nobody takes it personally. (Especially the guy who made this thread) ;)

I'd say it's not neccessary, for regular posters we all know who is around and who can be trusted.

On the flip side though it could be useful, I post through the day so I recognise SuB, Feronix, JamesRiley, MrKambo, Maniac, Tripp, Remember300, Alhocaust I think it's spelt, SieB etc but the night time guys I don't know, but doesn't mean they can't be trusted.

It's 50/50!

some sort of like or Rep system could be handy, would give an opportunity to let user judge if a user is trustworthy or not.

then again there is the likelihood such a system could be abused. i think it's still worth a try, if it isn't too much to ask.

I think the post count is a sort of rep system. See someone with a thousand posts you can think well they are regular and actually care about this stuff.

Doesn't necessarily mean they know what they are talking about though

I know I know, but there is a better chance of them knowing there stuff if they are regular and not just a couple of troll posts.

I just think it will turn into like like like like everywhere. If someone is wrong we only have to say, we don't need to build up someones rep with a like button really. Tough one.

that won't be fixed by a rep system either.
a high post guy will have a bunch of rep points just because of the shier amount of posts he puts out while a guy with much more knowledge won't have such a good rep because he hasn't posted much yet.
even a blind chicken finds a seed sometimes.
/edit
also it could backfire, if some guy usually puts out very good content and then suddenly writes an utter stupid reply he will still have more influence in the thread than someone who has specific knowledge in that matter but not in general.

Best thing to do is add a "thanks" button that doesn't give any rep or add any kind of rep points to someone.

Having a "thanks" button that does nothing but simply act as a way of saying thanks for a post that helped you or you found interesting is the best of both worlds really. You still get credit for helping someone and at the same time it can't be abused and doesn't matter how may thanks and or post you have or don't have.

There are some people that have a post count in the thousands but most of their posts are made up of one line sentences like "I agree with the above" and saying "hello" in introduction threads. So going off post count alone doesn't really mean anything, at the end of the day though this is a forum, and the majority of people stick around. So something like a rep count is only useful for new comers. Anyone that doesn't stick around isn't going to be bothered by it and the ones that do don't really need it.

Just my opinion on the matter anyway.

I think a rep system would be cool, so if someone is helpful a user can submit a comment and rep point.
Can't see the harm in that?

Edit:
As above, a 'Thanks' option would be cool.

if i recall, there used to be a rep system - but the forum changed and it was neglected.

BTW: my rep was awesome. :P

I really agree with SieB on this one.............it really makes sense !:)

I think a "thanks" button could be useful for helping new users find credible advice, and less vulnerable to abuse than a thumbs up/down system.

Something similar to tomshardware maybe.
In threads where the OP has asked for a solution to something, he can then leave a permanent mark on the answer and potentially help other people who have the same problem, even if they only happened on the thread via a google search.
Having it done in that way rather than a reputation indicator would certainly avoid the problems of following potentially bad advice from someone just because they have a high rep from other areas they might have more knowledge in.

Such a thing being implemented elsewhere could possibly have saved us from having to witness that 900D with rainbow intestines.

The problem is the trade off. Having extra buttons on every forum post, and "The following users said thanks for this helpful post: ... ...." may make the site look cluttered.

Maybe something on your profile page instead, so it's out the way and not cluttering the site, sort of like eBay feedback?
