Optical Drive Disappeared

Hi All,

Today, when I first logged into windows, I went about my evening tasks per usual. And when I went to access one of my drives I noticed none of my optical drives where showing.. The same goes for my virtual drives too, not only this but the windows disk management does not see them either, however the Intel RST program does?

Anyone got any idea's?

Edit: Just had another look at Device Manager, and turns out windows is detecting them, but there is a warning sign on each of the icons and when I click on property's it gives me this error in the device status tab "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"... A restart also did not fix it as another site suggested...

Did you edit the registry lately? If not, some viruses can change registry entries. Your best bet is to use system restore to go back to a point where you didn't have these issues.

The only registry key I edited was to edit a value for my CAD/CAM software.... Virus free as far as I'm aware too, will try a sys restore...

Will get back to you, thanks mate :)

Hi all, yassarikhan, unfortunately your suggestion of the system restore didn't work, however I did find a page on 'toms hardware', that had a post which suggested the following:

Step 1: Start Registry Editor

'Start Registry Editor.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry

In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message: Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed.
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry

In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.

Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.

If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message: Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
Exit Registry Editor.
Step 4: Restart your computer'

That did it for me, and hopefully anyone else that comes across this page with the same problem :)

Thanks for both of your suggestions though guys :D

That's good to hear. It's generally not a good idea to edit your registry for anything and if you do, it's a good idea to make a backup of it first so you can import the working copy if anything goes wrong.
